    • A Raman amplifying method in which a signal light is pumped by two or more pumping lights of different wavelengths, in which the wavelengths and powers of the two or more pumping lights are combined, a part or all of the combined−wavelength pumping lights are used for bidirectional pumping, and the distribution of power of pumping light to the wavelengths is varied not varying the total power for bidirectional pumping or almost not varying it. A part of the combined−wavelength−and−power pumping lights are used for the forward pumping, and all the combined−wavelength−and−power pumping lights are used for the backward pumping. Among the combined−wavelength−and−power pumping lights, the pumping lights of the short wavelengths are used for the forward pumping, and all the pumping lights are used for the backward pumping. In any combination, the power of the forward pumping lights is larger than that of the backward pumping lights. The LD used is an iGM (trademark of an LD applied for trademark registration by the present applicant of this international application).
