    • A display element having high response characteristics, wide visual angle characteristics, and high contrast characteristics and exhibiting a wide driving temperature range and excellent durability and reliability. Furthermore, electrodes (4, 5) for applying an electric field to the cholesteric liquid crystal layer (3) in the direction substantially parallel with the surface of the substrate are provided. The cholesteric liquid crystal layer (3) exhibits optical isotropy in the direction parallel with the surface of the substrate under a state applied with no voltage. A display is presented by applying an electric field to the cholesteric liquid crystal layer (3) thereby revealing optical anisotropy in the direction parallel with the surface of the substrate.
