    • A display element having high response characteristics, wide visual angle characteristics, and high contrast characteristics and exhibiting a wide driving temperature range and excellent durability and reliability. Between two opposing substrates (1, 2), a cholesteric liquid crystal layer (3) composed of a liquid crystal material developing a cholesteric phase having a sporadic torsional pitch shorter than the wavelength of visible light is provided. Orientation films (8, 9) for orienting liquid crystal molecules in a specific direction in the vicinity of the interface of the substrate are provided on the opposing faces of the substrates (1, 2). Furthermore, electrodes (4, 5) for applying an electric field to the cholesteric liquid crystal layer (3) in the direction substantially parallel with the surface of the substrate are provided. The cholesteric liquid crystal layer (3) exhibits optical isotropy in the direction parallel with the surface of the substrate under a state applied with no voltage. A display is presented by applying an electric field to the cholesteric liquid crystal layer (3) thereby revealing optical anisotropy in the direction parallel with the surface of the substrate.

    • An OCB liquid crystal display.
