    • A cognitive imaging system and a method of cognitive imaging are disclosed including a step of classifying the complexity of a background environment in a segment, sub-frame or region of interest (ROI) of a frame captured by a monocular camera. The monocular camera being installed in a vehicle (vessel or craft) in order to have a field of view in the normal direction of motion of the vehicle. The classification is added to a queue of predetermined length and updated by adding a new classification every time a sub-frame is scanned in a subsequent new captured frame during target hazard tracking. The sequence of classifications form an environment analysing vector. The environment analysing vector is used to determine if the environment background for the sub-frame can be reused in a subsequent background subtraction to track the target in a subsequently captured frame. The resulting tracking data can be used to determine if a hazardous situation is imminent and to alert the vehicle driver or to control the vehicle to avoid the hazard.
