    • A method of making a composite product, such as a basin or a tile, includes the steps of impregnating particles of an exfoliated vermiculite or a lignocellulosic material with an impregnating composition comprising a first thermosetting resin, an extending liquid for the thermosetting resin, if necessary a catalyst for the thermosetting resin and a colouring agent for the particles; removing the extending liquid; subjecting the impregnated particles to suitable conditions, generally of temperature and for pressure, to polymerise or cross-link the first thermosetting resin; coating the particles so produced with a binder composition comprising a second thermosetting resin and if necessary a catalyst for the second thermosetting resin; forming the particles into a desired shape, either in a mould or on a plate of a press; and subjecting the particles to suitable conditions to polymerise, condense or cross-link the second thermosetting resin to bind the particles together to form the composite product.

    • A method of applying a powder coating to a length of lignocellulosic material such as for example a sheet of paper includes the steps of: (a) impregnating the length of lignocellulosic material with an impregnating composition comprising either: (i) a dicarboxylic anhydride or a tricarboxylic anhydride dissolved in a suitable non-aqueous solvent; or (ii) an isocyanate thermosetting resin dissolved in a suitable non-aqueous solvent; or (ii) a combination of a dicarboxylic anhydride or a tricarboxylic anhydride and an isocyanate thermosetting resin dissolved in a suitable non-aqueous solvent; (b) if necessary removing from the impregnated length of lignocellulosic material any excess of the impregnating composition; (c) removing the non-aqueous solvent or solvents; (d) placing the impregnated length of lignocellulosic material in an electrostatic field or in a fluidized bed and applying a powder coating composition thereto so that the powder coating composition adheres thereto; and (e) then subjecting the length of lignocellulosic material to elevated temperatures to polymerise and/or cross-link the resin or resins in the length of lignocellulosic material and to cure the powder coating composition to form the powder coating.

    • A method of making a finished product having a density of from 200 kg/m 3 to 1250 kg/m 3 inclusive, from an expanded mineral feedstock selected from the group consisting of exfoliated vermiculite particles, expanded perlite particles, and a mixture of the two, includes the steps of: providing the feedstock in the form of finely divided particles; preparing a binder comprising an aqueous solution of an alkali silicate and a thermosetting resin in liquid form by: optionally mixing the thermosetting resin in liquid form with water; and mixing the thermosetting resin in liquid form or the product of step (a) with the aqueous solution of the alkali silicate to form an emulsion of the thermosetting resin in the aqueous alkali silicate solution; mixing the feedstock and the binder to give a starting material with a compression ratio of at least 1.5:1; and forming the starting material into a mat and pressing the mat at a suitable pressure and a temperature of from 70 °C to 180 °C inclusive, to compress the mat and to cause the thermosetting resin to set to form the finished product.
