    • Embodiments of a spooling machine for paper- or notebook-binding spiral coil, and the resulting spools, are described. The spooling machine (10) receives spiral coil (12) continuously or semi-co ntinuously from a source such as a forming machine that causes the coil (12) to rotate on its longitudinal axis as it is delivered. In a first station, the invented spooling machine (10) provides a cover preferably partially around the circumference of the coil (12) and along preferably the entire length of the coil (12), without stopping the axial or rotational movement of the coil (12). In a second station, the direction of the rotating, axially-moving coil (12) is turned, so that the coil (12) moves forward and radially outward from the longitudinal axis of the first station to a spooling or "reeling" position and then turns to travel directly toward the spool in a radial plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the machine and the spool. The invention machine places the spiral coil on a spool preferably without twisting or stretching the coil, and results in many wraps of coil on the spool with barrier material between the wraps to allow fast and effective un-spooling of the coil.
