    • A tool retainer for use in a line lubricator comprises a tool catcher arrangement for catching a tool and a resilient member which biases the tool catcher arrangement towards a tool catching configuration in which the tool catcher arrangement is capable of catching a tool when the tool is pulled into engagement with the tool catcher arrangement along an axial direction. The tool retainer comprises an indexing arrangement, wherein the tool catcher arrangement and the indexing arrangement are configured to interact so as to selectively release a caught tool in response to a predetermined sequence of axial movements of the tool catcher arrangement. The resilient member may resist axial motion of the tool catcher arrangement under the action of a force exerted on the tool catcher arrangement by the tool as the tool is pulled into a lubricator at the wellhead of an oil or gas well on the end of a line.

    • A wireline device for use in downhole operations may comprise at least one of a position indicator arrangement, a latch arrangement and a seal arrangement. The position indicator device may alert a winch line operator of the approach of a downhole toolstring to a stuffing box located at the wellhead of an oil or gas well. This may permit the winch line operator to control winching of the wireline so as to avoid retraction of the toolstring into engagement with the stuffing box thereby minimising the resulting risk of wireline breakage. The latch arrangement may retain the tool string relative to a wellhead housing so as to avoid the toolstring dropping back into the wellbore in the event of wireline breakage. The seal arrangement may prevent a hydrocarbon leak from the wellbore to an environment external to the wellhead housing in the event of wireline breakage.
