Hydrogenation catalyst comprising : ° a first constituent of at least one metal or metal-based component selected from the elements consisting of Groups 1-10 of the Periodic Table of Elements (new IUPAC notation) and a second constituent of at least one metal or metal-based component selected from the elements consisting of Groups 11 -14 of the Periodic Table of Elements, and ° said first constituent and second constituent are on a carrier made essentially of an alkaline earth metal silicate or of SiC, ° the second constituent is optional if the carrier is made essentially of SiC.
