    • A segment of a given signal is aligned with a corresponding reference segment by passing the reference segment through a full-wave rectifier (8), an anti-alias filter (10) and a first sampler (9), and storing the result in a first register (19). The output of the first sampler (9) is moreover passed through a second anti-alias filter (12) and a second sampler (13) which samples at a lower rate, and the result is stored in a second register (21). The given signal is then subjected to the same process with the exception that the output signals of the first (9) and second (13) samplers are passed continuously through first (23) and second (25) shift registers respectively until a correlator (40) indicates at least a predetermined degree of correlation between the contents of the second register (21) and the second shift register (25). A sliding correlation is then performed between the contents of the first register (19) and the first shift register (23) to determine the position of the correlation peak. The alignment process may be used when it is required to compare a segment of an audio signal recorded on a magnetic tape with the corresponding segment recorded on a master tape.

    • A mass-spectrometer comprises an ionisation chamber (4) and an electrode cell (10) for preferentially accelerating ions having a predetermined velocity towards a target electrode (12). The cell (10) comprises four serially arranged apertured electrodes (A, B, C, D) which are energized by an energization voltage generator (61). The generator (61) supplies a variable ion-attracting bias voltage to the first electrode (A) and periodic voltage waveforms, relative to the first electrode bias voltage, to the other electrodes (B, C, D), these waveforms all having the same period. At the start of each period the second and fourth electrodes (B and D) are supplied with a short ion-attracting voltage pulse. During each period the third electrode (C) is supplied with a voltage waveform which starts at an ion-repelling voltage V2 and ends at an ion-attracting voltage V2 and passes from one to the other via a step to an ion-repelling voltage V2/2, a linear ramp from this to an ion-attracting voltage V2/2, and a step from this to the ion-attracting voltage V2.

    • An optical modulation device includes first (1, 4, 6) and second (2, 5, 7) optically transmissive parallel plates having a ferroelectric liquid crystal material sandwiched between them. A plurality of spacer members (10), each secured to one of the plates, are located between the plates to maintain the plate spacing. The spacer members form walls defining parallel liquid crystal material-containing channels (11) which extend parallel to the plates. These channels communicate along their lengths with cavities (12) at least partly defined by the spacer members (10). These cavities may be created by segmenting each wall, the separations between the successive segments constituting the respective cavities. Alternatively, each wall (14) may be provided with a parallel auxiliary wall (10) of lesser height close to it but spaced from it, the space between the two walls forming a cavity.
