    • A gas pressure control valve having a valve body (11,12) with a gas inlet (25) and a gas outlet (58) is described. An inner cap (40) is provided bounding in part a chamber (47) within the valve body (11,12) in communication with the gas inlet (25). The valve body (11,12) contains a spring loaded piston (32,33) comprising a piston head (32) and a piston rod (33). The piston rod (33) includes a conduit (50) providing communication between the chamber (47) bounded in part by the inner cap (40) and a chamber (45) adjacent the piston head (32) and the gas outlet (58). The piston (32.33) is operable to move between a closed configuration in which the piston rod (33) prevents communication between the gas inlet (25) and the chamber (47) bounded in part by the inner cap (40) and an open configuration in which the piston rod (33) permits communication between the gas inlet (40) and the chamber (47) bounded in part by the inner cap (40). The piston head (32) is in a sealing engagement with the valve body (11,12) via a first seal (37) and the piston rod (33) is in a sealing engagement with the inner cap (40) via a second seal (39) contained within the chamber (47) bounded in part by the inner cap(40). the second seal (39) being held in a fixed position within the chamber (47).

    • A gas supply system is described comprising: a gas capsule (4) enclosed at one end by a pierceable diaphragm (22); a spacer element (20) adjacent the pierceable diaphragm (22), the spacer element (20) having a channel (25) providing access to the pierceable diaphragm (22); a shaft (42) with a piercing tip (38); and a seal (40; 47). The shaft (36), spacer element (20) and seal (40; 47) are arranged so that when the shaft (36) accesses the pierceable diaphragm (22) via the channel (25), the shaft (36) is caused to enter into a sealing engagement with the spacer element (20) via the seal (40; 47) before the piercing tip (38) pierces the pierceable diaphragm (22). In an alternative embodiment (Fig.6), no spacer element (20) is provided and instead a seal (65) is provided in a groove (66) in a wall (32) defining a recess (34) at a position so that when a gas capsule (4) is inserted into the recess (34), the seal (65) enters into a sealing engagement with the gas capsule (4) before the piercing tip (38) of the shaft (36) pierces the pierceable diaphragm (22) enclosing the gas capsule (4).

    • A medical breathing apparatus incorporating a regulator for supplying breathing gas to a patient from an air hose (11). The regulator supplies breathing gas on demand to the patient via a mouthpiece or similar attached to an output connector (55). The connector forms part of a removable output unit (4) incorporating a filter (53) and an exhale flap valve (57/58) on the patient side of the filter. When the patient exhales, exhaled gas entering the connector exits to atmosphere via the exhale valve without passing through the filter into the interior of the regulator, thus reducing cross -contamination between patients. Also described is an improved valve seat (16) /valve member (18) assembly in which multiple spaced pivot points (22, 23) are defined to cause the mechanical advantage for operating the valve member to reduce as the valve opens, thus reducing the force needed to operate the valve at lower flow rates.

    • An adjustable gas flow regulator device primarily for use in medical care, said device comprising a two-part body (8/25) having a high pressure gas inlet connector (1) and a gas outlet connector (16) mounted thereon. Mounted within the body is a conventional regulator comprising a piston (9) axially movable in a stepped bore (46/47). Mounted between the output of the regulator and the outer connector (16) is a flow selector device comprising a flow selecting member (13) rotatable by means of a knob (31). The flow selecting member (13) is formed with a plurality of radially extending bores (54) in the outer part of each of which is fitted a setting plug which may be externally adjustable by a tool (not shown). The inner part of each bore forms part of the route by which gas passes to the outer connector and the flow of gas through each such inner part can thus be adjusted by means of the setting plug so that, at each respective angular position of knob (31), a different flow setting can be obtained, as necessary.
