    • An inexpensive, cellular plastic mold comprises male (30) and female (20) mold elements which define a mold cavity therebetween, each of the elements (20) and (30) comprising a rigid thermoplastic foam or cellular board material having a smooth, integral, solid layer of plastic material forming the facing surfaces (22) and (26) of the mold cavity and relatively thick, solid supporting layers (40) and (38) of a plastic material forming the back surfaces of the mold elements (20) and (30). The cellular plastic male (30) and female (20) mold elements having contoured facing surfaces (22) and (26) are formed by pressing heated, metal mold or die elements (12) and (16) into the surfaces of thermoplastic foam planks (14) and (18), rapidly chilling the mold elements (20) and (30) and die elements (12) and (16), and releasing the die. The relatively thick, solid supporting layers (40) and (38) are formed by pressing heated flat, parallel surface, metal platens (34) and (36) on the back surfaces of the male (30) and female (20) mold elements, cooling the mold elements (30) and (20) and platens (34) and (36), releasing the platens (34) and (36) and removing the mold elements (30) and (20).
