    • Improvements in processing metal matrix composite materials by infiltration are disclosed. Specifically, an infiltration enhancer precursor is provided to a permeable mass or preform in vapor form, and further, the permeable mass or preform assists in confining the vapor. At least at some point during processing, an infiltrating atmosphere is communicated with the permeable mass or preform. The atmosphere is a particular type of infiltrating atmosphere which is capable of chemically converting the infiltration enhancer precursor to infiltration enhancer. In one embodiment, the vapor phase infiltration enhancer precursor is provided in vacuo or in an inert atmosphere initially, the reactive infiltrating atmosphere being provided only when a desired concentration of infiltration enhancer precursor vapor in the permeable mass or preform has been achieved. In another embodiment, a reactive infiltrating atmosphere is provided concurrently with vapor-phase infiltration enhancer precursor under conditions whereby infiltration enhancer is deposited as a coating layer on one or more surfaces of the permeable mass or preform. A molten matrix metal is able to readily wet and infiltrate such a layer. This infiltrated layer permits more rapid infiltration of the bulk of the preform. The infiltrated layer also provides the formed MMC body with an MMC surface whose properties may be similar to or different from those of the underlying MMC body.
