摘要： Techniques and assemblies for steering light rays are described. An electro-optic prism is operable to provide controllable steering of solar rays. The electro-optic prism includes a first electrode, a reference electrode and an electro-optic material positioned between the first and reference electrodes. In one implementation, the first electrode includes multiple substantially parallel linear electrodes positioned on a first substrate and the reference electrode is positioned on a second substrate. Such implementation can include that when separately controllable voltages are provided to at least some of the linear electrodes, a gradient electric field is provided within the electro-optic material to cause the electro-optic material to have a refractive index gradient. The refractive index gradient can be controlled by varying the magnitude of the separately controllable voltages provided to at least some of the linear electrodes.

In one aspect, a solar concentration assembly includes an array of light focusing elements (205) and an array of photovoltaic devices (207) positioned beneath the array of light focusing elements. The arrays of light focusing elements and photovoltaic devices are spaced from one another and configured to concentrate solar rays incident on the light focusing elements to the photovoltaic elements, such that solar ray communication is maintained as an angle of the assembly relative to the sun is altered by movement of the sun during a day and wherein the angle is an oblique angle for the majority of the day.

摘要： Techniques and assemblies for steering light rays are described. An electro-optic prism (202) is operable to provide controllable steering of solar rays. The electro-optic prism includes a first electrode (210), a reference electrode (230) and an electro-optic material (250) positioned between the first and reference electrodes. In one implementation, the first electrode includes multiple substantially parallel linear electrodes (210a - 210f) positioned on a first substrate and the reference electrode is positioned on a second substrate. Such implementation can include that when separately controllable voltages are provided to at least some of the linear electrodes, a gradient electric field is provided within the electro-optic material to cause the electro-optic material to have a refractive index gradient. The refractive index gradient (252) can be controlled by varying the magnitude of the separately controllable voltages provided to at least some of the linear electrodes.

The first electrode layer (304) is positioned on a first substrate (302) and includes substantially parallel linear electrodes having longitudinal axes orientated in a first direction. The second electrode layer (306) includes substantially parallel linear electrodes having longitudinal axes orientated in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. A layer of electro-optic material is not provided between the first (304) and second (306) electrode layers.

A system configurable to steer or focus or both steer and focus light rays includes an electro-optic steering assembly including a substrate (201) having an optically reflective surface (202) and an electro-optic layer in optical communication with the substrate (201). The electro-optic layer includes a first electrode layer (205) having separately addressable electrode components, a second electrode layer (203) and an electro-optic material (206) positioned between the first and second electrode layers. Voltages applied to the separately addressable electrode components can be controlled to provide a controllable refractive index gradient in the electro-optic material. The refractive index gradient can be controlled, such that light rays (209) impinging on the electro-optic steering assembly and reflecting from the optically reflective surface (202) can be controllably steered in a direction, focused to a point (212) in space, or steered and focused (210). An application includes focussing sunlight onto a photovoltaic device (211).
