    • Apparatus and methods are disclosed for detecting RFID devices, such as when detecting livestock. Transmitters generate cyclic patterns of RF electric field to energise RFID devices for detection. The cyclic patterns include transmitting phases to energise and silent phases to allow half-duplex (HDX) RFID devices to respond. These phases can be individually extended by the control processor when the system detects an RFID device, to give time for reading to be completed. Multiple transmitters have their phases synchronised, so that HDX devices continue to be readable, by means of a shared synchronisation signal which may - characterise every transmitting phase and/or every silent phase, so that plural transmitters quickly fall into synchronicity, and/or - characterise a fixed-duration pulse pattern, used for synchronisation, at its onset rather than in its silent phase.

    • An ear tag for animal identification is a one-piece plastics moulding with a female end (1) having an opening (12) and a male end (2) having a barbed spike (22), connected by a flexible link (3). It secures through an animal's ear in the conventional way, while presenting an exterior printable surface (32) to carry a visual identification code. Towards the female end (1) the link (3) includes a capsule (5) to hold an elongate transponder module (6). The insertion opening for the capsule cavity faces lengthwise of the link (3) onto the axis of the opening (12) at the female end (1), so that when the tag is locked in position the male spike (22) further blocks the cavity to ensure that the transponder module (6) cannot get out.

    • An applicator (1) for animal identification tags (9) comprises: a tag magazine receiver (3) configured to receive a tag magazine (5) comprising a reservoir (7) for holding a plurality of discrete animal identification tags (9), each comprising a male (11) and female (13) engagement portion, and an opening (15), wherein the identification tags are displaceable along the reservoir to be sequentially dispensed through the opening; a pair of jaws (31. 33) arranged to receive an identification tag dispensed from the opening of a received tag magazine, wherein the jaws are operable to engage the male and female portions of the identification tag through the ear of an animal placed between the jaws; a motorised tag dispenser (23, 25, 27) operable to displace the identification tags along the reservoir of a received tag magazine to sequentially dispense the identification tags through the opening; a sensor (41) for sensing information indicative that an identification tag has been dispensed through the opening and received by the pair of jaws; and a controller configured to stop operation of the motorised tag dispenser based on an output of the sensor.
