    • In a method for locating aural events, which are reproduced via headphones (11), with virtual placement outside the head of a listener (1) such that they have a constant spatial direction, the audio signals are influenced by a head-related transfer function (HRTF) such that the in-head localization which is typical of headphone reproduction is avoided. To avoid the effect of aural events which move with the head, the movement of the head is detected and the signals for the left and right channels of the headphones (11) are adjusted such that the direction (6) from which the aural event appears to come remains constant. The position of the head is detected either relative to the trunk of the listener (1) or absolutely in the listening space. When detecting the absolute position of the head, the position signal is routed via a high-pass filter (21), so that rapid changes in the head-position for a relatively short time are forwarded to a filter tracking circuit essentially unchanged. Changes in the head-position for a longer time result, according to the transfer time of the high-pass filter (21), in the correction of a preferred direction (4) from which the aural event is perceived. In addition, an arrangement for carrying out the inventive method is proposed.

    • In the MPEG-4 standard ISO/IEC 14496:2001 several audio objects that can be coded with different MPEG-4 format coding types can together form a composed audio system representing a single soundtrack from the several audio substreams. In a receiver the multiple audio objects are decoded separately, but not directly played back to a listener. Instead, transmitted instructions for mixdown are used to prepare a single soundtrack. Mixdown conflicts can occur in case the audio signals to be combined have different channel numbers or configurations. According to the invention an additional audio channel configuration node is used that tags the correct channel configuration information items to the decoded audio data streams to be presented. The invention enables the content provider to set the channel configuration in such a way that the presenter at receiver side can produce a correct channel presentation under all circumstances. An escape code value in the channel configuration data facilitates correct handling of not yet defined channel combinations.

    • An mp3-standard bitstream is formatted into a sequence of fixed-length data frames. These include headers, side infor-mation, main information and a remaining data field without generally defined information denoted as 'ancillary data'. The mp3PRO format is an extension of the mp3 format, wherein the additional mp3PRO data are transferred in the ancillary data fields. In various applications, e.g. Internet music search machines, a necessity arises for a fast determination of the bitstream types. Such determination is normally exe-cuted using an mp3PRO decoder. However, because the frame header does not contain a corresponding pointer to the start address of the ancillary data field, an mp3PRO decoder must first completely decode at least one data frame according to the mp3 standard in order to find the end address of the mp3 data and thereby the following start address of the mp3PRO data in that data frame. Thereafter the mp3PRO decoder must examine the data following in the data stream for character-istics that are typical for mp3PRO additional information. The invention discloses how the bitstream type can be deter-mined without using mp3 decoding and without using an mp3PRO decoder.

    • In a digital audio-signal transmission process, the digitalized audio-signals are coded in subbands; one or more scaling factors are determined for each subband, the thus coded signals are transmitted in data frames, then decoded and reproduced at the reception side. The data frame has several parts, i.e. a header, an error control and/or correcting part, a preferably CRC protection word (cyclic redundancy check), an audio data part having among others a bit allocation table, a scaling factor selecting information, one or several scaling factors per transmitted subband, scanning values, essentially meaningless filling bits and a supplementary information part with audio-signal-dependent supplementary information. The object of the invention is to improve the protection of the above-described subband-coded audio-signals against transmission errors. For that purpose, supplementary error protection information or an error protection bit is introduced in the data frame, instead of meaningless filling bits, in order to protect the scaling factors. Acoustically unconfortable play-back disturbances caused by scaling factor errors are thus eliminated. The invention finds applications in digital audio broadcast (DAB), DAB-receivers, recorders and play-back systems.
