    • A scalable motion image compression system for a digital motion image signal having an associated transmission rate. The scalable motion image compression system includes a decomposition module for receiving the digital motion image signal, decomposing the digital motion image signal into component parts and sending the components. The decomposition module may further perform color rotation, spatial decomposition and temporal decomposition. The system further includes a compression module for receiving each of the component parts from the decomposition module, compressing the component part, and sending the compressed component part to a memory location. The compression module may perform sub-band wavelet compression and may further include functionality for quantization and entropy encoding.

    • An image processing scheme that minimizes (175) the amount of data required to process an input image signal (120) but which maintains a guaranteed desired image quality level is disclosed. Transformation (185) and quantification (190) removes redundant data from the input image signal and provides a symbol set that is represented by a determined total data content. A peak data rate is determined from the total data content and any encoding overhead. The quality of image processing is determined based upon the transformation and quantification settings. Quality priority processing ensures that the available data rate is at least equal to the peak data rate. Transformation and quantification can be adjusted where a determination is made that the peak data rate exceeds the available data processing rate, or where the determined quality level does not exceed the selected quality level.

    • A system, method, and electronic chip for compressing a digital data signal while maintaining a quality level is disclosed. A signal is received that is representative of a quality level. The signal may be received into a computer system or into an electronic chip, such as an application specific integrated circuit or an electronic chip operating with a computer system. A digital data signal, which may be a digital image stream is decorrelated based in part on the received quality level. The decorrelated digital data signal is quantified according to frequency so as to provide equal resolution across all frequencies. The quantified digital data signal is then entropy encoded. The digital data signal is thereby compressed. Upon decompression, the uncompressed data maintains the desired quality level over all values. If the values are color components within a digital image stream, the color components will have the desired S/N ratio.

    • An electronic chip for processing a digital image stream having digital data values representing pixels and resulting digital signal. The electronic chip includes a compression module for compressing the digital image stream so that upon decompression the digital image stream maintains a pre-determined signal to noise ratio for each digital data value. The compression module may compress the digital image stream such that digital data values are quantized so as to maintain a desired resolution over all frequencies. The electronic chip may further include a digital image input port for receiving the digital image stream and a digital data output port for outputting the digital data stream formatted as a digital data packet.

    • A system for scaling resolution of an image input stream to a desired resolution is provided. The system comprises a processor for pre-processing the image input stream; an IO system for receiving the image input stream; an input analog converter for converting the image input stream, a frame buffer for storing image frames, a router for decorrelating the image input stream and dividing the stream among one or more processors, a temporal processor for performing temporal transforms of the image input stream, a DMA channel for delivering the encoded data to a storage device; and a local storage device for storing the processed image input stream. The method uses the described system components to create a scaleable resolution motion image recording that can be stored and played back on any number of different playback devices.
