    • Disc-shaped planar electric heating elements (1) of the type comprising a stainless steel substrate carrying a resistive track or layer on one side thereof demonstrate a tendency to bow as their temperature changes and this can cause difficulties as regards maintaining proper thermal contact between the heating element (1) and an overtemperature protection control (2) associated with the heating element. To overcome this problem the invention proposes to employ a bracket (3) for mounting the control, the bracket having a plurality of legs (10) fixed to the heating element and two of the legs, which define therebetween a mounting for the control, being fixed to the heating element at positions (11) which are symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of a radius of the disc-shaped element. With this arrangement, if the heating element bows in use, the bracket moves accordingly and maintains the control in thermal contact with the heating element.

    • A steam sensor control for an electrically heated water boiling appliance comprises a thermally-responsive actuator in the form of a helix of Titanium-Nickel-Copper alloy shape memory effect (SME) material. The actuator develops a high force and substantial movement as compared with a bimetal and enables a sealed steam sensor control to be achieved wherein the switching contacts of the control are housed within a body part of the control and are isolated from the SME sensor, which is on the outside of the control body part, by a diaphragm seal formed of silicone rubber, the diaphragm seal having an integrally moulded push-rod which on the steam (wet) side of the diaphragm serves as a mounting for the SME helix and on the dry side operates the switching contacts via a bistable trip lever.

    • A contact thermostatic switch has a dished, snap-acting bimetallic disc (5) cantilevered from one end of a diameter whereat the edge of the disc is loosely retained between a housing moulding (1) and a metal cap (6) secured to the moulding. At the other end of this diameter, the edge of the bimetallic disc engages a pip (4d) on one end of a lever (4) which is pivotally-mounted in the housing at its other end. When the bimetallic disc (5) snaps to its oppositely dished configuration, it moves the pivotally-mounted lever (4) so as to determine the condition of a set of switch contacts by virtue of the end of the lever (4) which carries the pip (4d) also having depending fingers (4c) which abut a moving-contact carrying leaf spring (2b) of the switch. The cantilevered mounting of the bimetallic disc and its interaction with the lever enables a smaller than conventional disc to be used, with consequent significant cost savings, without prejudicing the operation of the switch.

    • A connection system for so-called "cordless" electrical appliances is designed to permit a substantial degree of freedom in the placement of the appliance proper onto the base from which it takes its electrical supply. In a first embodiment (Fig. 1), a plug and socket connector is employed, the plug being coupled to the appliance proper and the socket to the base, and the socket incorporates a pair of pivoting shutter elements which are arranged to be pivoted apart as the plug is inserted into the socket, the plug at the same time unlocking a shutter locking arrangement; this arrangement permits insertion of the plug into the socket throughout almost a full 360 of relative rotation of the plug relative to the socket. A second embodiment (Fig. 7) employs but a single shutter element in the socket part and the shutter is arranged to jam and prevent access to the socket if it is not uniformly depressed; this arrangement permits a full 360 of rotation of the plug relative to the socket.

    • An electrical appliance (1) is protected against overheating by the provision of a plurality of series-connected, auto-reset type thermal cut-outs (2) each located in the appliance in the region of a potential hot-spot, and by the provision of a thermal relay comprising a bistable thermally-responsive switch (3) connected in the main power supply line of the appliance and a heater (4) associated with the switch and connected so as to be energized in the event of any of the cut-outs going open circuit. The thermally-responsive switch (3) will thus operate, due to heat generated by the heater (4) and after a certain time delay, in response to any of the cut-outs (2) operating in response to local overheating. The cut-outs (2) can be located at relatively inaccessible regions of the appliance and do not have to be accessed to be manually reset, and the thermally responsive switch (3) can be located in a readily accessible prominent position. This arrangement overcomes the problem of having to have the appliance attended to by a service engineer whenever a cut-out nuisance trips in response to a transient condition, as is the case conventionally when non-auto-reset type cut-outs are employed.

    • Steam sensor controls in electrical water heating appliances, such as jugs and kettles, operate to switch off the power supply to the heating element of the appliance when water boils in the appliance. The control operates in a wet environment on account of steam condensing on relatively cold parts of the control and this can lead to electrical arcing across wet surfaces of the control. The control is commonly manufactured using moulded plastics material parts (20, 21, 22) and these can be degraded by arcing and give rise to carbon tracks which progressively degrade the electrical insulation properties of the plastics mouldings and can result in failure of the control. To resolve this problem without need for expensive sealing the invention proposes to continue to utilize moulded plastics material for the major component parts (20, 21, 22) of the control, but to insulate electrical terminal parts (23, 24) of the control from each other by means of ceramics material parts (25) incorporated into the control, preferably as push-fit components which engage with appropriately formed apertures in plastics material components of the control. Ceramics materials are generally not susceptible to carbon tracking when wet.

The element construction enables dry-boil protection and automatic switch-off on boiling to be achieved by use of a single thermal sensor coupled to the heat transfer element (8) since the steam generated in the enclosure when water boils causes water to be expelled from the enclosure thereby mimicking a dry boil situation.
