    • A customer sends a CAD file (32) for a part (10) to be manufactured to a system. One or more acceptability criteria (40, 42, 44, 46) are applied, such as manufacturability in a three-axis CNC machine. The system returns a file (58) graphically indicating any portions of the part needing modification for manufacturability. Using a quotation form, the customer selects several parameters independent of the shape of the part (10), such as number of parts per workpiece block (202), surface finish (104, 106) and material (108). A quotation module (64) provides the customer with the cost to manufacture a total number of profiled machined parts. Proposed modifications (60, 60a, 62) in a molding process are controlled by the customer's budget (118). The customer may interactively modify the quotation by modifying the initially selected parameters (102, 104, 106, 108, 110, 116), including selecting a different budgeted amount (118).

The quotation also allows the customer to select several part-level parameters which are independent off the shape of the part, such as quantity (64) of each part and surface finish (66, 68). The system (38) assesses the CAD files to determine savings which can be achieved by molding the parts (10, 30) as a family, with multiple parts in the same mold block (92). If possible, the system machines cavities (98, 102) for the multiple parts (10, 30) into a single mold block (92), passing on reductions in cost to the customer both in the quote and in the final product delivery.

    • A computer program analyzes a CAD file provided by a customer of a custom part (10, 12) to be injection molded. Feedback from the analysis is provided to the customer through a rendering of the part (10, 12). Rather than merely communicating using color as applied to the rendering file and separate text, the invention applies one or more symbols as "decals" (32, 38, 39, 40, 42) to the rendering of the part (10, 12) provided to the customer. The symbols (32, 38, 40) may be chevrons or arrows which indicate the direction of additional draft needed on particular faces for the part to be sufficiently manufacturable. The symbols (32, 38, 39, 40, 42) are sized appropriately for the face (14, 16, 20, 22, 34, 36) to which they are applied, and are oriented to match the orientation of the face. The symbols (32, 38, 39, 40, 42) may also indicate other information, such as the magnitude of draft needed, magnitude of thickness required, the surface finish to be applied, or time or location based properties of injection molding.

    • A first customer provides a CAD file (22) defining the surface profile for a part (10) to be molded to the system (14), and a second customer does the same for a second part (12). The system (14) determines whether the materials match and the run dates overlap, thereby qualifying the parts for use in a multi-customer mold block (52). The system (14) assesses the part surface profile (which could have any of a virtually infinite number of shapes) of the parts (10, 12) submitted and lays out the parts (10, 12) from multiple customers on one or more multi-customer mold blocks (52). Savings are generated, such as by reducing redundancies in press clean-up, in set-up, in tooling, and in surface finishing. Due to these savings, the system (14) provides a quotation of the part to at least one of the customers which differs from the quotation that would be provided if each part was run independent of parts of other customers.
