摘要： A pit (10) for installation in a hole (13) in the ground to provide access to an underground service line (11). The pit (10) comprises a body (15) defining a central pit area (25). The body (15) has a side wall structure (17) surrounding the central pit area (25), an open top (21) adapted to receive a cover (23), and a base (19). The body (15) has upper and lower body sections (31, 33) moveable one relative to another for varying the depth of the pit area (25). The two sections (31, 33) are in partial overlapping relationship, and locking means (35) are provided for releasably securing the overlapping sections (31, 33) together. With this arrangement, the sidewall structure (17) is selectively extendible and contractible for varying the level of the open top (21). The base (19) has provision for the pit (10) to be fitted around the service line (11) even when the latter is already installed underground, thereby avoiding the need to cut the service line (11) to accommodate it within the pit (10).
