    • A press bending apparatus (10) for shaping heat softened glass sheets between an upper press member (30) and a lower press member (32) is provided. The conveyor system (28) for transferring the sheets of glass (12) in the press bending apparatus includes concave shaped rollers (68) such that the glass sheets tend to sag into conformity with the rolls (68) as the sheets are positioned for bending operations between the upper (30) and lower (32) press members. The lower press member is a continuous press bending ring (50) to prevent improper sagging of the glass sheet (12) around the peripheral edges of the sheet (12). The concave shape of the rolls (68) mounted inside of the press ring (50) provides maximum support for the formed glass sheet to prevent sagging of the glass. Additional production benefits can be obtained by forming the conveyor system (28) and lower press member (32) as a modular unit and the upper press member (30) as a modular unit for each model of bent glass to facilitate changing the press members for production model changes.

    • An automatic windshield wiper control system responds to sensed moisture in a manner which is responsive to changes in conditions. Moisture (40) and noise (43) sensitive signals are digitized (11), and a functional block (42) detects the reversals of the moisture sensing signal towards a quiescent level. These reversals are considered rain events and on ongoing measurement of the frequencies of these events are produced. The resulting signal is representative of the flow rate of raindrops impinging upon the moisture sensor. A resulting rain intensity signal (49) permits rapid but bounded response to sudden changes in conditions and an appropriate wiper actuation rate (73) is determined. The control strategy features hysteresis, giving the system the propensity to continue operating in a given mode.

    • A method and apparatus for shaping glass sheets as the sheets advnce along a bed (38) of conveyor rolls (40). The conveyor rolls (40) comprise a core (76) having aligned opposite sections (70, 72) and curved portions (74), with a sleeve (78) surrounding the core (76). The sleeves (78) rotate about the cores (76) to convey the sheets. The cores (76) are pivotable between a position where curved portions (74) lie in a plane for conveying the sheets and a lowered position where curved portions (74) define shapes to which the sheets are to be deformed. Vertically reciprocable press units (154, 156) are mounted above glass sheets. The press units (154, 156) include curved stationary mandrels (168) having rotatable sleeves (178). The configurations of the mandrels (168) are such that in operative position the midddle of the mandrel of the first press unit (154) is closer to conveyor roll (40) than the edges, and the edges of the second mandrel are closer to conveyor roll (40) than the middle.

    • A method of and apparatus for establishing a predetermined thermal profile in a glass sheet immediately prior to press bending outside the heating furnance (12). The press bending members (26, 27) are provided with arrays of heating elements (70, 76) that are individually or zone regulated to assist in establishing an optimum temperature profile in the glass sheet conducive to proper bending. The temperature profile established in the heated sheet by the arrays of heating elements (70, 76) is coordinated with that established in the furnace (12) and subsequently, modified by heat dissipation as the glass sheet advances to the bending station (13) to achieve the proper bending temperature. The heating elements (70, 76), can also be utilized to create a temperature profile in a glass sheet generally higher than that originally established in the furnace (12). The sheet can be held in contact with one or both of the heated press members (26, 27) for a brief period of time after bending to slow the cooling rate of the sheet and increase the edge strength of the marginal edge area thereof.
