    • Methods and apparatus for powering a dimmable ballast operating a gas-discharge bulb in a cold cathode mode of operation, that is, without requiring heating of filaments. The ballast circuit includes a rectifier, bypass capacitor, driver circuit, and a tank circuit that includes a resonant circuit that are configured to ionize a light source, such as a fluorescent lamp, every half cycle of the input voltage. The bypass capacitor supplies energy to produce a high frequency current introduced into the resonant circuit to continually recycle energy in the resonant circuit, resulting in a ballast with a high power factor. A tank circuit comprising a tapped inductor operating in a non- saturated or limited saturated mode provides additional voltage to the bulb to ionize the bulb. The ballast may be dimmed and combined with other energy savings circuitry.

    • Methods and apparatus for dimming light sources are described herein. In certain embodiments, a bias circuit selectively biases a solid state switch during a portion of half-cycle of a line voltage after a settable delay. In some embodiments, the delay of the bias circuit is adjustable by a user, which varies the amount of energy provided to a light source, and the light generated there from. A charge circuit biases the switch for a period of time in the event the bias circuit experiences an operating condition (a ringing current) that may cause the switch to become open during the half-cycle of the line current. As a result of the charge circuit, the light source coupled to the line current does not experience substantial flickering and is compatible with low power compact fluorescent lights. The dimmer can be combined with other components to form a light harvesting system.

    • Methods and apparatus for saving energy in a ballast comprising a tank circuit for a gas-discharge lamp are disclosed. A feedback circuit and a filament shutoff circuit cooperate to detect energy in the tank ballast and save energy during operation. The feedback circuit detects current flowing in the tank circuit of a ballast and can signal to shut off a voltage regulator in the ballast, and/or signal to a filament shut off circuit to reduce energy consumed by the filaments in the bulb after ionization has occurred. A time delay ensures that the signal voltage generated does not immediately deactivate the voltage regulator and/or the filament shutoff circuit when powering the ballast, but only does so after ionization has occurred, hi this manner, energy consumption is reduced after ionization of the bulbs has occurred.

    • A power amplifier for use in medical and veterinay testing and therapy. A tunable pulse-width-modulated signal generator (110) is connected to a gating element (120) to provide a digital waveform suitable for comprehensive control of the waveform shape and average output power provided by the apparatus. The digital waveform controls a power driver (130). Through use of a high-Q resonant circuit including a capacitor and a primary winding (150), a coil assembly (1), a voltage of about 150-400 volts is increased to about 10 kilovolts at the primary winding (150). The coil assembly has a secondary:primary turns ratio of 10:1, resulting in a signal of about 100 kilovolts at the output of the secondary winding (170). This arrangement produces a corona discharge at a discharge pin (320) connected to the secondary winding (170). A manual tuning embodiment and a self-tuning embodiment are disclosed.
