Each chicken is introduced into a compartment (9) comprising a limited amount of space, which compartment may be present in a container including one or more such compartments, and the container with the chicken or chickens present therein is moved. The chicken will thereby stand on a supporting surface (11) which is stationary with respect to the compartment, after which the legs (35) of the chicken are gripped by gripping elements (16, 17) while the chicken is standing on the supporting surface. In order to get into the compartment, the chickens are led through passages arranged in side-by-side relationship.
