    • A grinding mill (100) for particulate material includes a rotary container (106) having an inner surface (118), a material feed for feeding the particulate material to the container, a first rotary drive (108,110,112) rotating the container about a first rotational axis (116), and a shear inducing member (126) contacting the particulate material in the container so as to induce shearing in the particulate material layer. The shear inducing member is mounted about a second axis (138), which is angularly displaced from the rotational axis of the container. The mill may also include an angle adjustment mechanism (140,146,148,150) for adjusting the relative angular displacement of the container rotational axis (116) and the shear member axis (138).

    • There is provided a pinched sluice apparatus for classification of a feed particle mixture into two or more factions, including a pinched sluice (12) with a sloping floor (14) and a pair of convergent side walls (16) forming a sluice channel which changes in cross-section from being shallow and wide at the inlet end (18) to being deeper and narrow at the discharge end (20). Elutriation fluid is introduced through the floor (14) and is passed through the bed (24), while the sluice is reciprocated (38) to induce alternating up and down acceleration of the sluice channel relative to the settling force (22, 68), such that classification is achieved by alternating differential acceleration and hindered settling of particles in the bed. A centrifugal version of the device is also disclosed.

    • A centrifuge is disclosed in which the rotor (10) has a plurality of compartments (26) spaced about the rotor axis (18) and feed means (20, 74) for continuously distributing a mixed feed material to the compartment inlets (30). The material undergoes centrifugal settling while flowing through the compartments and is discharged as separated fractions. Preferably, the compartments change in transverse cross section between their inlet end (30) and outlet end (32), the inlets being circumferentially elongate and the outlets being more radially elongate, the change in cross section exaggerating the radial settling effect achieved. The compartments may be divided into a peripheral region (110) and an axial region (112) by a filter (114). The mixed feed is supplied to the peripheral region and a light fluid fraction passes inwards through the filter to be discharged from the axial region.
