    • A combined rudder and propeller arrangement for propelling, steering and maneuvring ships and other water craft. The arrangement includes a rudder (1) which is rotatable relative to the ship about a vertical rotational axis. Built together with the rudder (1) is a propeller unit (2) which includes a propeller (6) which is mounted on a horizontal propeller shaft journalled for rotation in a propeller unit housing (9). The unit is also journalled for rotation relative to the ship about a vertical axis. The rotational axes of the rudder (1) and propeller unit (6) coincide, such as to enable the rudder and unit to be rotated relative to one another. The rudder (1) may be connected to a steering machine (11, 13, 14) for rotation of the rudder whereas the propeller unit (2) is selectively lockable to either the ship in a fixed position, or to the rudder for co-rotation therewith.

    • A water jet propulsion unit for watercraft includes a propeller pump housed in a pump housing (3) which has provided therein an inlet opening (3a) which is connected to a water delivery conduit (6) extending to a water intake opening (7) located beneath the water line of the watercraft, and an outlet opening (3b) through which a jet of propulsion water is generated when the pump is in use. For the purpose of preventing fouling in the water delivery conduit (6), or the formation of ice in the delivery conduit, when the propulsion unit is not in use, there is provided a means (8) for closing the outlet opening (3b) of the pump housing in an essentially airtight manner and means (9, 10) for supplying air under pressure to the delivery conduit (6) in a manner to force from the conduit any water present therein.

    • An actuating system for a controllable pitch propeller comprises a hydraulic servomotor (4, 5) arranged in the propeller hub (2) and being connected mechanically to the propeller blades (3). Pressure medium is delivered to the servomotor (4, 5), under the control of a control valve (7), from a pressure-medium source (33), which is connected to a stationary pressure-medium chamber (15) which embraces a rotatable shaft (1) connected to the propeller and which is sealed against the outer surface of the shaft and communicates, via a radial pressure-medium channel (19, 20, 21) in said shaft, with an axial pressure-medium channel (10) located in the shaft and extending to the hydraulic servomotor (4, 5). The system further comprises an additional stationary pressure-medium chamber (16) which embraces the shaft and seals against the outer surfaces thereof and which, via an additional radial pressure-medium channel (24, 25, 26) in the shaft communicates with the axial pressure-medium channel (10) in the shaft. The system also comprises an additional pressure-medium source (34), and each of the two pressure-medium sources (33, 34) can be connected alternatively to any one of the two pressure-medium chambers (15, 16), whereby the actuating system can be operated in a substantially unchanged manner irrespective of faults in any of the two pressure-medium sources (33, 34) and irrespective of faults in any of the high-pressure seals (17, 18) of the two pressure-medium chambers (15, 16).

Sealed spaces (27, 45) which are defined by the shaft end-part and the ends of the propeller hub (12) are then formed with the aid of a sealing member (19) which is part of the bearing assembly and which can be attached to the propeller hub (12), and with the aid of a hub cap (40) which is attachable to the hub over the rear-end of the shaft end-part (15). Corrosion inhibiting liquid is passed through the spaces so as to expel any water that remains at those locations at which the end-part of the shaft enters the propeller hub and exits therefrom. When dismantling the propeller, there is fitted over the end-part (15) of the shaft a protective cover which, together with the sealing member (19), defines a sealed space around the end-part of the shaft. A corrosion inhibiting liquid is introduced into this space so as to expel any water that is enclosed in the space and to protect the end-part of the shaft while the propeller remains dismantled.
