    • Disclosed are techniques for coding coefficients of a video block having a nonsquare shape defined by a width and a height, comprising coding one or more of x- and y-coordinates that indicate a position of a last non-zero coefficient within the block according to an associated scanning order, including coding each coordinate by determining one or more contexts used to code the coordinate based on one of the width and the height that corresponds to the coordinate, and coding the coordinate by performing a context adaptive entropy coding process based on the contexts. Also disclosed are techniques for coding information that identifies positions of non-zero coefficients within the block, including determining one or more contexts used to code the information based on one or more of the width and the height, and coding the information by performing a context adaptive entropy coding process based on the contexts.

    • A low-resolution image extracted from a scalable high-resolution bit stream in a DCP bit stream is provided with enhanced quality. One process includes creating (302, 504) a compressed code-stream for an image such that a higher-resolution compressed bitstream and a lower-resolution compressed bitstream can be extracted before decompression. An enhancement-layer compressed code-stream (enhancement layer) is created (524) for enhancing an image corresponding to the lower-resolution bitstream. A data package is formed (918, 1110, 1306) including the compressed code-stream and at least one of (1) the enhancement layer or (2) a pointer to the enhancement layer. The data package is sent (918, 1112, 1308) for receipt by a device configured to extract the lower-resolution bitstream, and to enhance the image corresponding to the lower-resolution bitstream by using the enhancement layer. A complimentary signal and decoding process are also provided, as well as structures for performing the processes.
