    • The spectroscopic process uses a detector in the form of a linear array of detector units made of a photoconductive semiconductor material. Radiation from a sample is limited by a slot and broken down into its spectrum; the spectrum thus obtained is used to illuminate the detector and is evaluated making use of the dependence of the conductivity of the semiconductor material on the radiation intensity. The beam path between the sample and the detector is periodically interrupted by a chopper to generate dark and bright phases. At least one measuring cycle is conducted, a measuring cycle comprising the measurement of a complete spectrum in a bright phase and a complete spectrum in an adjacent dark phase, and the measured values of a measurement quantity clearly dependent upon the conductivity of the detector elements of the detector are determined during both the dark and bright phases in one measuring period. The intensity of the radiation impinging on the detector in the bright phase is found from the comparison between the measurements obtaines in the bright phase and those found in the dark phase. The interruptions in the radiation and the measuring periods are mutually synchronised in such a way that a measuring period lies either only within a bright or only within a dark phase. The measuring period is variable and adjustable, the interruption of the beam path is regulated depending on the measuring period and a sprectrum is evaluated only once the synchronisation of the phases of the chopper with the measuring periods is ensured.
