    • An illumination device includes a first light source, a second light source, and a light- diffusing medium. The first light source emits light of a first hue, and the second light source emits light of a second hue. The light-diffusing medium receives light emitted from the first and second light sources. The light-diffusing medium is composed of a light-transmitting material and a light color-converting material. The light color-converting material is selected to convert the light of a first hue into a light of a third hue, and to pass the light of the second hue with substantially no conversion. The light-diffusing medium thus emits light of a perceived hue that is a combination of the light of the third hue and the light of the second hue. By adjusting the relative intensities of the light emitted by the first and second light sources, the perceived hue can be readily transformed or tuned.

    • An illumination device has a light-transmitting member formed in the shape of a toroid having a light-receiving surface and a light-emitting surface, the light-transmitting member defining a central axis, a light source located along the light-transmitting member central axis, and a light-directing housing for guiding light from the light source into the light-receiving surface of the light-transmitting member. The light-transmitting member may have optical waveguide and light-scattering characteristics, whereby the light-transmitting member emits light having a substantially uniform intensity along the light-emitting surface. The light-directing housing has a top reflector member and a bottom reflector member positioned on opposing side of the light source and cooperating with the light-transmitting member such that light is emitted only through the light-transmitting member.

    • A lighting system includes a helical light-transmitting fiber and an LED. The helical light-transmitting fiber is doped with a first wavelength converting material and defines a helical axis. The LED has a light-emitting portion for emitting light of a first color. The LED is aligned axially with the first helical fiber such that a portion of any light emitted by the LED will pass through the open space between the turns of the first helical fiber and a portion of any light emitted by the LED will be received by the first helical fiber and converted to light of a second color. Adjustment of the compression of the helical fiber will adjust the mixture of colors in the light emitted by the system. Further, the relatively small cross-sectional area of the fiber serves to lessen any dye migration in the fiber.
