    • A blind type fastener (10) for securing a plurality of workpieces (24, 26) is provided that has a sleeve (14), a pin member (12) and a drive nut (16). The sleeve has a body that is internally threaded along a portion of the sleeve, a head (42) positioned at one end of the sleeve and an internally unthreaded deformable tail portion (30) positioned at the other end of the sleeve that is integrally connected to the sleeve. The head of the sleeve has a plurality of recesses (46) disposed thereon. The pin member is adapted to be disposed within the sleeve and has a breakneck groove that is adapted to fracture at a position that is flush with an outer surface of the sleeve head. The drive nut has a plurality of projections (48) positioned on one end of the drive nut that are adapted to be disposed in the plurality of recesses disposed in the head of the sleeve.

    • A fastening system (10) is provided that includes a fastener having a pin (24) member (24) with a lock groove (26) and crest geometry that is optimized to receive swaged material from collars (14) of materials of different strengths for securing workpieces (18, 20) for different load applications. The lock grooves (26) have the longest width required for collars (14) of lower strength for one application or greater strength for a second application and the crests have the longest width required for collars of greater strength for the second application whereby satisfactory clamp and tensile loads and resistance to failure will result when the lock grooves (26) are filled with collar materials of different strengths. The lock groove (26) and crest geometry is of a uniform construction for the plurality of applications with pin members of a common diameter. Certain collars (14) of different materials have similar outside diameters for installation by a tool (48) having a swage anvil (56) with a uniform swage cavity that swages the collars (14) into the lock grooves for securing workpieces in shear, shear/tension, shear composite and shear/tension composite applications. A method of designing a fastener is also provided that has a uniform lock groove and crest geometry for use in the plurality of applications.

    • A two piece blind fastener (10) for securing a plurality of workpieces (20, 22) including a hollow sleeve (12) having an enlarged sleeve head (26) at one end and a pin (14) having an enlarged shear ring (46) at the end opposite the sleeve head followed by an elongated retention portion (48) of reduced diameter. The shear ring is adapted to engage and move inside the sleeve to form a tuliped shaped blind head in response to a relative axial force applied between the pin and sleeve and to shear off proximate to the inner or blind sheet line (64) of the workpieces. The retention portion is then moved with the pin shank (40) into the shear ring and with the shear ring finally located at a position on the retention portion depending upon the overall thickness of the workpieces. This provides a clamp and lock section between the pin and sleeve at the inner or blind side of the workpieces. The pin and sleeve have a lock structure actuated after final formation of the clamp and lock section to provide a lock between the pin and sleeve.

    • A low swage load fastening system is provided for installing swage-type fasteners. The fastener includes a pin member having an elongated pin shank. An enlarged head at one end of the pin engages one side of the workpieces. A grooved pin portion extends past an opposite side of the workpieces. A collar includes a shank portion adapted to be swaged into the pin lock grooves in response to a relative axial swage load applied by an installation tool. One aspect of the system, the collar is as-headed and does not require thermal processing yet provides an optimum balance of reduced collar shank wall thickness and increased hardness, whereby the swage load is minimized. A low wage load thread form for the lock grooves of the pin is also provided, a reduced diameter, relatively short pull portion pin extension, installation tool improvements, and an associated method of use are also disclosed.

    • A blind fastener (10) for securing a plurality of workpieces (24, 26) is provided that has a sleeve (14), and a pin member (12). In an alternate embodiment, the blind fastener has a sleeve, a pin member and a nut. The sleeves (14) have a head (42) with a plurality of rearwardly sloping recesses (54) disposed therein. Use of the splined head (38) on the pin member (12), the splined driver (62), rearwardly sloping recesses (54) on the sleeve (14), and rearwardly sloping nibs (56) on the nose (58) eliminates camming out of the nibs (56) from the recesses (54) during installation of the blind fastener (10). A nose assembly (60) for installation of the blind fastener (10) is also provided.
