    • To determine the Young's modulus of adhesive layers or sealant layers less than 1 mm, preferably less than 0.2 mm thick, the following steps are carried out: application of the adhesive to at least one of two joining elements; arranging the two joining elements with a joining gap of a preset width of less than 1 mm; allowing the adhesive to set; exerting of a force on both joining elements in the direction of a separation of the two joining elements; plotting the change in the gap width as a function of the size of the force acting on the joining elements. The Young's modulus of the adhesive is calculated according to the formula: E adhesive = ( σ z / ε z ) ·[( 1 + ν ) · ( 1 - 2ν ) / ( 1 - ν )], where σ z / ε z = E hindered is the Young's modulus measured according to the invention. To produce an adhesive layer or sealant layer of a defined layer thickness in the joining gap the following steps are carried out: pressing the two joining elements against each other before the application of the adhesive and setting the displacement sensors to zero; and setting the gap width before the application of the adhesive or sealant in accordance with the values displayed by the displacement sensors. The gap width is set by means of fitted micrometers, the width of the gap between the joining elements being set to the approximate value by means of the fitted micrometers before the application of the adhesive, and the width of the gap after the application of the adhesive being adjusted by means of the fitted micrometers and taking account of the display of the displacement sensors.

    • An apparatus (1) for the application of a composition curable by irradiation to a fastener (2) having a conveyor (3) for conveying fasteners to an application station (5); an application station (10) comprising an applicator from which the composition is dispensed. The conveyor rotates the fasteners past the applicator for application of composition. The same or another conveyor (8) conveys the fasteners to an irradiation station (10) and rotates the fasteners for irradiation thereof. The irradiation station irradiates and thus cures the composition applied to each fastener. The invention also provides a curable composition for application to a threaded article, comprising a dispersion of: (i) components of a first cure mechanism comprising: (a) a (meth)acrylate functional monomer component; (b) a (meth)acrylate functional oligomer component; and (c) a photoinitiator component; (ii) components of a second cure mechanism comprising: (e) an amine component; and (f) an encapsulated epoxy resin component; together with (iii) a thickener component suitable to impart sufficient viscosity to the uncured composition to maintain the dispersion of the other components in the composition; wherein the photoinitiator component is suitable upon irradiation of the composition to achieve a first cure through the depth of the composition applied to a threaded article so that a binder matrix is formed with the components of the second cure mechanism dispersed through the matrix.
