    • A verifier (20) for verifying the authenticity of a communication sent via a communications network from a first network component (10) to a second network component (1000) including input means/apparatus arranged for receiving via the communications network an encrypted communication from a said first network component. The verifier has key means/apparatus operable to issue to a said second network component a key associated with the first network component on condition that the verifier has verified the encrypted communication to be decryptable using said key thereby to enable the second network component to decrypt encrypted communications from the first network component sent independently of the verifier apparatus.

    • A user receives a message via a network service platform at their mobile handset. The user is required to input a PIN, password or other authentication data, before the received message is displayed. The service platform generates a partial encryption key (101) and embeds this within a message (102) which is subsequently encrypted (103) and transmitted to the receiving device (104). The receiving device or handset receives the message (105) and decrypts it (106) using a previously stored pseudo-random seed, combined with a user entered PIN (steps 109 to 116). The receiving device or handset extracts the partial key delivered with the message (107) and uses this key data to generate a new pseudo-random seed which, in turn, is used to generate a sequence of characters in an apparently random order (108). This sequence of characters or numbers is presented in a text-only form with a cursor or other highlighting method selecting the first character in the pseudo-random sequence (109). The user is then able enter their PIN (110) by using cursor control keys (such as the right/left keys). The device or handset validates the data entry and, assuming that the secure data is valid, displays the message content.

    • In a mobile telephone system (100), the plurality of users (101) are able to connect to a plurality (in this example, three) of different mobile networks (102) each operated by a different network operator (103) an thence to a plurality of service providers (105) or secondary service providers (106). The service provider's (105) are each connected to the network operator's (103) via one or more aggregator's (104). In the present invention a message distribution management system (110) is positioned between the network operators (103) and the aggregators (104). The message distribution management system (110) is operable to combine, the message source and destination identifiers as a key used as a lookup device to apply one or more filters to particular messages travelling between the aggregators (104) and the network operators (103). If any messages do not comply with the applied filter criteria, they are halted.

    • A method for securing communications in a communications network between a first network component (e.g. user's device) and a second network component (e.g. service apparatus). At the first network component a first data set (40) represents user-perceptible content which is reproduced for perception and selection by a user of the first network component. The method includes forming a network communications link between the first network component and the second network component subject to conditions requiring at least that a user input (47) is received at the first network component indicating selection of the reproduced user-perceptible content by the user.
