    • Embodiments of the invention provide methods, devices and computer programs arranged to facilitate access to device-to-device (D2D) communication services in a communication network. One embodiment comprises an apparatus for use in controlling access to a device-to-device (D2D) communication service in a communication network, the apparatus comprising a processing system arranged to cause the apparatus to: receive a D2D discovery signal comprising data indicative of said D2D communication service; determine a verification state for the D2D communication service as one of a first verification state and a second, different, verification state, on the basis of said received D2D discovery signal, the first verification state being one in which said D2D communication service can be verified by the processing system; and in the event that said D2D communication service is determined to be in the second verification state, transmit data indicative of said D2D communication service for verification by the communication network.

    • A method,apparatus and computer program product are provided to efficiently establish communications regardless of the radio resource control (RRC) state of the device that issues the discovery signal. In regards to a method,a cell identification and/or tracking area code is associated with a discovery signal. Thereafter, the method causes a discovery signal to be transmitted to discover another device with which to establish communications. The method also receives a paging signal in response to the discovery signal and causes communications to be established in response to the paging signal. By associating a cell identification and/or a tracking area code with at least part of the discovery signal, the paging signals may be focused in the cell and/or tracking area in which the device that issued the discovery signal is located, even when the device is in an RRC Idle state.

    • Apparatus, methods and computer program products are provided for use in controlling operation of a device that is in wireless communication with an access point and comprises a buffer in which data to be sent to the access point is stored. An exemplary embodiment comprises the steps of: causing the device to operate in a first mode in which the device is capable of sending data to, and receiving data from, the access point; receiving control data from the access point, the control data comprising first data indicative of a time period, and second data indicative of a control parameter; causing the device to operate in a second mode for the time period specified by the first data and on the basis of the control parameter, in which, in the second mode, at least some circuitry of the device used for sending data, and at least some circuitry of the device used for receiving data, is placed in a low power state, and data to be sent to the access point is stored in the buffer; and after expiry of the time period, causing the device to operate in the first mode whereby to send the data stored in the buffer to the access point. Method, apparatus and computer program embodiments are also provided for use in controlling operation of a cooperating access point.
