The fiber optic cable includes at least one optical fiber, at least one strength element, and a cable jacket having a cavity. The at least one optical fiber is disposed within the cavity. The cable jacket further includes a concave upper wall and a concave lower wall disposed on opposite sides of the cavity, thereby improving the crush performance along the major axis of the optical fiber cable. In other embodiments, the fiber optic cable is a portion of a cable assembly.

The at least one optical waveguide (12) is disposed within the tube (18) and generally surrounds the at least one optical waveguide (12). In one embodiment, the dry insert (14) has a first layer comprising a felt having at least one type of non-continuous filament. The dry insert (14) may also include a plurality of water-swellable filaments (24a). In another embodiment, a dry insert (14) has a first layer (172), a second layer (176), and a plurality of water-swellable filaments (174). The first and second layers (172, 176) are attached together at least along the longitudinal edges thereof, thereby forming at least one compartment (174a) between the first and second layers (172, 176) and the plurality of water-swellable filaments (174) are generally disposed in the at least one compartment (174a). The dry insert (14) also is advantageous in tubeless cable designs.

The cable jacket has two major surfaces that are generally flat and includes a cavity with a cavity minor dimension generally orientated with a minor dimension of the fiber optic cable, wherein the at least one optical fiber is disposed within the cavity. In one embodiment, the cavity minor dimension of the fiber optic cable is about the same size or larger than the strength member dimension that is generally aligned with a minor dimension of the cable, thereby allowing access to the cavity when the fiber optic cable is entered while inhibiting damage to the at least one optical fiber. Fiber optic cables of the present invention are also suitable as a portion of a cable assembly.
