摘要： A rotor (10) for a centrifugal separator, comprising bearing means (13, 14) for mounting the rotor for rotation about a substantially vertical axis in such a way that fluid to be treated can be supplied through the bearing means (13, 14) to the interior of the rotor (10), and at least one nozzle (25) provided on the periphery of the rotor in the region of its lower end such that the reaction force caused by fluid discharged through the nozzle (25) serves to spin the rotor (10) about the substantially vertical axis. The provision of the nozzle (25) on the rotor periphery (11), inter alia, provides increased torque because the nozzle is at a maximum distance from the rotary axis. According to other aspects of the invention, the rotor has three or more nozzles (either in the base or in the periphery) and nozzles are provided at different distances from the rotary axis, the outer nozzles providing incrased torque particularly for start-up.

摘要： A piston (10) is assembled with its correct piston rings (12) by the piston manufacturer before dispatch to an engine manufacturer or repairer. This is achieved by use of a piston ring retainer (14, 20, 22, 23, 29, 32, 37) which holds the rings flush with the piston surface and which is such as to allow the assembly to be packaged in a container not substantially different in size from the piston. The assembly can then be removed from the container by the manufacturer or repairer and be inserted into a cylinder bore of an engine with the rings correctly arranged.

摘要： A method of connecting aluminium or aluminium alloy to another metal material in which the other metal material (13) is connected first to a porous metal material (12). This may be by brazing or welding. This assembly is then placed in a die and the aluminium or aluminium alloy (10) is fed under gravity to the die and then solidified under pressure in a squeeze casting technique. The aluminium or aluminium alloy (10) penetrates the porous metal material (12) so that, on solidification, the aluminium or aluminium alloy (10) is firmly connected to the other material (13). This can find particular application in the manufacture of pistons for internal combustion engines where the piston body is of aluminium of aluminium alloy and a wear of heat-resistant insert is of ferous material. The insert may form a crown of the piston or an expansion control insert or a piston ring groove or an entrance to a combustion bowl or a combination of these features.
