    • A user equipment (UE) conducting machine-type communication (MTC) attempts to blindly decode a message it received using a pre-arranged and finite set of transport formats; and sends on an uplink radio resource feedback about the message, wherein the feedback is based on a result of the blind decoding. Each transport format of the pre-arranged set comprises a unique combination of modulation and coding scheme, physical resource block set;, and number of transmit repetitions. Prior to the message the pre-arranged set may be indicated to the UE in wireless signaling, or it may be specified in a radio standard. The set may be designated for downlink messages and a second set designated for uplink messages. Various embodiments are described for the uplink radio resource on which the feedback is sent, and conventional HARQ feedback is adapted for MTC in these teachings.

    • There is a predefined mapping of antenna ports to radio resources (REs/REGs/CCEs). An antenna port configuration for a user equipment (UE) is selected from among multiple predefined configurations each having two antenna ports. Each of the radio resources which map from at least one antenna port of the selected configuration are identified according to the predefined mapping to define a search space consisting of the identified radio resources in each physical resource block pair set that is assigned to the UE. The network transmits a control channel to the UE within the defined search space using the antenna ports of the selected configuration. The UE confines its blind search for the control channel to the defined search space and to the antenna ports of the selected configuration. The examples have the control channel as ePDCCH and show that both distributed and localized ePDCCH can be multiplexed even to the same PRB pair set.

    • A cell identification procedure for small cells in wireless networks in alternative embodiments. Macro eNB may signal all user equipment (UE) to perform detection and signal quality measurement based on a single extended physical discovery channel (PDCH) transmission. UE may perform synchronization then quality-level measurement on the same PDCH signal. Alternatively, the macro eNB may signal all UE to perform the measurement based on the channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) after synchronization and cell detection on PDCH signal. In another approach, eNB may only transmit CSI-RS upon receipt of a detection result from UE. If no new UE are entering a small cell, the cell may send CSI-RS periodically for measurement while PDCH may not be provided at all. A hybrid mode may be implemented in which UE may use either PDCH or CSI-RS for measurement, determined by UE on its own.
