    • A reinforced conveyor belt cleaning blade is provided. In one form, the reinforced cleaning blade includes a blade body and a metal insert that is of a substantially constant cross-sectional configuration extending between the ends thereof. The ends are surrounded by molded material of the blade body so that the blade body and insert have a secure connection therebetween. The preferred insert is a formed sheet metal member that has smooth surfaces extending along its length without projections or sharp corners. In another aspect, a method of manufacturing a conveyor belt cleaning blade is provided including placing a metallic insert for the cleaning blade in a mold and molding the body of the cleaning blade with polymeric material extending completely around ends of the insert. Preferably, the insert is magnetically held in position in the mold such as on a rail on which magnets are mounted.

    • A conveyor belt cleaner is provided having a removable cleaner assembly that may be easily connected and disconnected from an elongate support member. The cleaner assembly includes one or more scraper blades mounted to an angle bar, an interface between the blades and the angle bar, and an interface between the blades and the support member. The blades have bodies that cover or surround the interfaces and reduce the likelihood of debris entering the interfaces and binding the blades to the angle bar and/or the support member. The cleaner further includes a securing mechanism with a pair of clamps for clamping the angle bar against seats of the elongate support. The clamps cause the angle bar to hold a base portion of the blades against the support member which permits the blade base portions to transmit loading from the conveyor belt directly to the support member.

    • A tracking apparatus and method for urging a mistracking conveyor belt back towards a correct travel path are provided. The apparatus and method both utilize downstream shifting of an end portion of an idler roller due to mistracking of the conveyor belt for directing or steering the belt back toward its correct travel path and a reaction force from the belt due to the steering thereof for energizing a tilting action of the idler roller to raise the downstream end portion thereof. In this manner, the tilting of the idler roller is not mechanically coupled to the downstream shifting of the roller end portion allowing the belt tracking apparatus herein to be bi-directional for use with conveyor belts that may be run in opposite travel directions.

    • A belt lacer uses a power drive carriage for clinching hook or C-shaped belt lacing elements to a belt end. Optionally, the carriage may be driven in a manual mode or a power mode. A detachable power drive such as from an electric drill may be used for the power mode. The power drive of the carriage may be stopped short of an end wall and a return mechanism may return the carriage to the power drive. A moveable belt support in a hand space position allows for working on the lacing elements and may be shifted to a belt supporting position. The belt clamp exerts a forwardly directed force on the belt as it is being clamped. Face plates or combs may be stored on the belt lacer. A latch secures the face plates against lateral sliding during clinching by clinching rollers on the carriage.

    • A rivet collating system is provided that includes a rivet holder for supporting rivets in a predetermined pattern. In one form, the rivet holder includes a unitary plate in which apertures are configured for supporting the rivets depending therefrom. In another form, the collating system includes a plate body and drive heads that are integrally connected via frangible portions to the plate body. Preferably, retaining webs are provided about the apertures to releasably hold the rivet heads therein. The drive heads are driven downward to sever the frangible portions with the webs flexing to release the rivet heads so that the rivets can be received in bores of a guide block of a belt fastener installation tool. A method of manufacture of the rivet holders is also disclosed.

    • A fastener (10) for splicing ends (30) of conveyor belts (28) together is provided having a rivet (12) that is pre-inserted thereto to provide speed and ease in installation. The rivet (12) is held in an aperture (18) of the upper plate (14) by an interference fit at the lower end thereof. Preferably, the interference fit is achieved by knurling of the lower end portion (24) of the rivet shaft to create raised interference portions (26) or ridges integral therewith that are sized to be in an interference fit in the upper plate aperture (18). The remainder of the shaft (22) can be sized to provide clearance between it and the aperture (18). An applicator machine tool (32) is also provided for automatically securing a strip of the pre-inserted rivet fasteners (12) to a belt end (30) in a fast and efficient manner. The tool (32) uses operating members (86) to first drive pilot nails (40) through the belt lower surface (90) into registry with the rivets (12), and thereafter the rivets (12) are driven coordinated with the pilot nails (40) that are withdrawn back through the belt (28). The pilot nails (40) stop at a predetermined position and the rivets (12) continue to be driven for forming the upset heads (54) at the bottom of the rivet (12).

    • A strip (5) of riveted belt fasteners (10) is provided manufactured in a punch press or the like to form multiple belt fasteners at a time with the fasteners each being attached to an end of a conveyor belt (14) by way of a single rivet (44) extending through single apertures (26, 28) in upper (18) and lower (20) plates of each of the fasteners. The small fasteners herein are provided with sufficient strength to be used in abusive hay baler applications while the fasteners must travel about small pulleys, e.g. 3" to 3.5" inches in diameter. Further, the installation of this rivet belt fastener in the field is about as simple as driving a nail requiring a portable applicator tool (74) and a hammer. That is, the fasteners can be riveted attached to the belt end by way of a low cost applicator tool that includes recessed hardened anvil surfaces integrally formed in the body thereof to upset initially rivets which are driven through the belt with a separably attached pilot nail. The hollow rivet end flares out against the hardened anvil surfaces of the tool with the surfaces being inclined for curling of the rivet end back up into an enlarged recess in the overlying plate aperture. As the rivet is driven, the belt compresses with the rivet end being upset; and upon removal of the driving force, the belt decompresses to draw the curled, upset rivet end into the plate aperture.
