    • System for directing light includes a light source (10) and a generally tubular, hollow coupling device (12,14) with an interior reflective surface for receiving light from the source (10) and an inlet and transmitting it as a generally diverging light beam at a reduced angle through an outlet (20). A thermal-isolating region (16) has an inlet (22) proximate an outlet (24) of the coupling device and an outlet for passing light to an optical member (26). An arrangement for splitting the light from the outlet of the foregoing region comprises a plurality of light guides (30). Each light guide (30) includes an inlet end (26a,28a) for receiving light from the thermal-isolating region and an outlet end for directing light to a remote location (24,28). The inlet ends are substantially coplanar with each other and form a substantially solid shape (26a,28a). The coupling device (12,14) and thermal isolating region (16) are shaped so as to distribute a respective, substantial amount of light to each of the plurality of light guides.

    • A luminaire with improved lateral illuminance control comprising a light pipe with a longitudinal center is disclosed. A fight-extraction means applied to a radial swath of the Sight pipe has a longitudinal portion having dimension along its length, centered about a slice on the light pipe longitudinally; said slice being orthogonal to the longitudinal center and located in a propagation plane through which light propagates to a virtual target area intersecting the propagation plane. The light pipe intervenes between the radial swath and the target area. A first average efficiency point of the light-extraction means corresponds to the minimum distance to the target area being at least approximately 20% less than a respective, second average efficiency point corresponding to a respective maximum distance to such area. The light-extraction means efficiency varies from the first average efficiency point to the second average efficiency point though more than one non-zero value.

    • Lighting apparatus and method includes a body (9) of optically transparent material including selected surface portions (11) that are polished to promote internal reflections of light flux and to inhibit lateral emission of internal light flux, and including other selected surface portions (13) that are modified from smooth to refract or diffuse internal light flux for lateral emission of light flux from such surface portions of the body (9). The modified surface portions (13) of the body (9) may include grooved or otherwise roughened regions (27) to a depth that inhibits surface wetting to relatively smooth surface condition which would diminish lateral emission of internal light flux. Alternative surface conditions for refracting or diffusing internal light flux to laterally-emitted light flux may be provided by laminated or layered light diffusers such as plastic tape or adhered glass or plastic beads.
