    • In a system for filtering fibers and particulates from a gas stream, a fiber separator (10) is disposed to remove fibers in gross quantity from the gas stream. A corona charging apparatus (20) is disposed downstream of the fiber separator (10) to impart electric charge to particulates and to fibers that escape removal from the gas stream by the fiber separator (10). An electrostatic filter medium (30), which may advantageously be mounted on the cylindrical wall of a drum filter, is disposed downstream of the corona charging apparatus (20) to remove electrically charged particulates and fibers from the gas stream. The corona charging apparatus (20) comprises at least one fiber-rejecting corona discharge electrode (21 or 25). The fiber-rejecting electrode (21) comprises a shielding portion (22) facing upstream and a corona discharge portion (23) facing downstream in the gas stream. The radius of curvature of the shielding portion (22) is greater than the radius of curvature of the corona discharge portion (23) in a plane parallel to the gas stream so that the corona discharge occurs in a region that is shielded from fibers carried by the gas stream.

    • The object of the invention is to provide a system and method for dry quenching coke while simultaneously substantially eliminating pollutants emitted during coke pushing and quenching operations. The method includes pushing the hot coke from a coke oven (7) into a hooded, mobile coke quench car (2), drawing the pollutants, emitted during the push, downwardly through the hot coke by a jet draft inducer (34) to oxidize the pollutants and produce an inert combustion gas. The gas is further drawn through lines (32 and 33) from the bottom portion of the quench car after cooling by heat exchanger (42), the recovered heat being used for supply of hot water to line (40) for use in the jet nozzle, the nozzle also acting o clean the cooled inert gas. The cooled, cleaned inert gas is returned to the hood (12) through a line (48) for further passage through the hot coke.

    • Following reverse gas flow cleaning of bag filters in a baghouse (17), controlled re-inflation of the bag filters is provided by a poppet valve (10) positioned in an opening (15) through which dust-free gas can pass from the baghouse (17) into a clean gas plenum (20). The poppet valve (10) comprises a valve plate (30) affixed to a valve stem (31) that is mounted for translational motion in the opening (15) so that the valve plate (30) can cover the opening (15) when the opening (15) is to be closed and can be moved away from the opening (15) when the opening (15) is to be unclosed. A cylindrical skirt (32) affixed to the valve stem (31) provides restricted gas flow through the opening (15) for a sufficient time to enable gradual re-inflation of the bag filters as the valve (10) is being opened following reverse gas flow cleaning of the bag filters. The cylindrical skirt (32) has a longitudinally extending orifice portion such as at least one longitudinally extending slot (50) to enable the rate of dust-free gas flow through the opening (15) to be increased gradually as the valve (10) is being opened.

    • A machine and process for washing paper stock pulp and other vacuum-filterable materials includes a wash drum (10) mounted in a tank (30). Two endless filter belts (50 and 52) are trained to pass around the wash drum (10) and through wash liquid contained in the tank. A mat of pulp is formed between the two endless filter belts (50 and 52) and carried on the wash drum (10) and through the tank (30) for washing therein. Wash liquor is pulled by vacuum through the pulp mat as it travels under the drum (10) thereby washing the pulp mat. After the pulp has been washed it is removed from between the two belts (50 and 52).

    • A contaminant capture system for a coke oven pushing operation is provided. It includes a suction means (56), a duct (50) and coupling means (54) therebetween. The duct (50) is closed by a flexible web (60). A car (64, 66) is moved to a selected position along the duct (50) to raise the web (60) communicating a first (80) and second (20) mobile hood with the interior of the duct (50). An inspection door (152) on the car (64, 66) provides access to its interior. The hood (80) is disposed over conveyor (44). First and second track means (62, 72) supports the hood (80) in a cantilever manner. The hood (20) withdraws contaminants evolved as coke is pushed from an oven (12) to the conveyor (44). It includes means (370) forming an air curtain and for directing air toward the coke oven door. Valve (128) selectively controls evacuation of the hood (20) through second duct (92). A striker means (420, 422) breaks pushed coke into sized lumps. To accomodate thermal expansion, each of plural sections (48) in the duct (50) has one free end engaging an adjacent duct section (48).
