    • A control system for and a method of fault isolation and electrical power restoration on an electrical network are provided and comprise: a plurality of electrical power supply facilities connectable to a region of a network, the region comprising a plurality of segments connectable to one or more neighbouring segments by a respective switching device; and the method including the steps of: detecting a fault condition within the region; operating the plurality of switching devices connecting the segments within the region so as to disconnect those segments from one another; performing a reconnection routine for each of a plurality of reconnection zones, being run concurrently, and each including the steps a to d of: a) selecting from the set of all unpowered segments within the reconnection zone a single unpowered segment that is connectable to a neighbouring powered segment, or is connectible to the electrical power supply facility associated with the reconnection zone, b) connecting the selected segment to provide electrical power to that selected segment, c) determining whether a fault has occurred within the reconnection zone, d) if a fault is determined to have occurred at step c, setting a halt status and identifying the selected segment as the segment causing the fault condition, or else repeating steps a to d until all segments within the reconnection zone are electrically connected to the respective electrical power supply facility, or until a halt status is set by another one of the concurrent reconnection routines; isolating the segment identified as causing the fault condition; and reconnecting the segments within the region to an electrical power supply facility, excluding the identified isolated segment.

    • A system for controlling power consumption on a portion of a distribution grid, the system including a data set including a previously measured power consumption associated with previously measured values of a property, the property being one of voltage, current, frequency or load, or a combination thereof, a processing device to determine from the previously measured values of the property in the data set a most likely effect of altering the values of the property from a first value to a second value on the power consumption, a storage device for storing one or more rules associating a measured condition with a corrective action associated with one or more of power-consuming units, and wherein the corrective action includes at least one of turning on or off one or more power-consuming units, turning one or more power-consuming units off or on temporarily for a pre-determined time duration, instructing the power-consuming units to reduce or raise their power consumption to alter the value of the property from the first value to the second value, the system determining whether a measurement meets a measured condition of a stored rule, and for each triggered rule, communicating instructions to the respective power-consuming units to perform the corrective action associated with the triggered rule.

    • We provide a method of detecting a power island in a power distribution network of the type comprising: a plurality of distribution lines connecting consumers to electrical power supplied from one or more substations, a plurality of circuit breakers and/or switches each operable to connect and disconnect transmission of electrical power along an associated distribution line, each being associated with a communication device operable to communicate the status of the circuit breaker and/or switch to a monitoring system, and one or more embedded generators each connected to a distribution line within the power distribution network so as to provide electrical power to the power distribution network, the method including the steps of: storing at the monitoring system data representing the connectivity of the distribution network including a status of each circuit breaker and/or switch, receiving at the monitoring system a communication from a communication device that an associated circuit breaker and/or switch is disconnected, determining at the monitoring system, using the data representing the connectivity of the distribution network, whether the disconnection of the circuit breaker and/or switch has resulted in a portion of the power distribution network being electrically disconnected from the remainder of the power distribution network that remains electrically connected to the one or more substations, and identifying the disconnected portion of the power distribution network as a power island within the power distribution network.
