    • A system and method provide down-conversion of 3D content to 2D content. A content receiver receives 3D content, down-converts the 3D content into a 2D format, and transmits the content in the 2D format to a content display device. Alternatively, the content receiver transmits the 3D content to the content display device in a 3D format, and a wearable viewing device down-converts the 3D video content into a 2D format. The wearable viewing device is active or passive and allows some images to be transmitted through the lenses for viewing by the user and other images to be blocked by the lenses to prevent viewing by the user, thereby providing the content in a 2D format. The wearable viewing device for viewing the content in a 2D format offers flexibility to others desiring to watch the 3D content on the content display device in the 3D format displayed.

    • To enable an image on a display to be viewed in 3-D, an activation system (300) is arranged to use electromagnetic radiation to activate a pair of photochromatic lenses (306). The lenses (306) are inversely reactive so that in response to a spectrum of electromagnetic radiation (312) a first lens (308) becomes substantially transparent whilst a second lens (310) becomes substantially opaque. In response to the absence of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation (312), the first lens (308) is substantially opaque whilst the second lens (310) is substantially transparent. The activation system (300) includes a synchronization unit (302) which synchronizes the emission of electromagnetic radiation (312) from the non-visible light source (304) with the content presented on the display. Thus, the activation system (300) controls the pair of lenses (306) such that the right eye of the viewer perceives frames encoded for the right eye whilst the left eye similarly perceives frames encoded for the left eye. When the frame rate is great enough that the viewer perceives the right and left channels simultaneously, the synchronization of the frames and lenses produces a stereoscopic effect.

    • An electronic program guide indicates the time of presentation and the channel or source of various programs. By use of a remote control device (30), a user is able to navigate the electronic program guide to highlight and then select a particular program which is being broadcast at the present time. The electronic program guide is displayed by a receiver (22) which is networked with other receivers. The electronic program guide is also enabled to present details of various programs which were broadcast at a time earlier than the present time. Some of those earlier programs have been stored and that is also indicated. A user, by use of the remote control device can navigate backwards in time in the electronic program guide to an earlier stored program (34). This earlier program can then be highlighted and selected. It is then either downloaded to the user's receiver or streamed in real time to the user's receiver.
