摘要： A vertebral fixation system including an elongate rod and a vertebral anchor for securement to a vertebra. The vertebral anchor includes a head portion for receiving a portion of the rod. The elongate rod may be formed of a material having a modulus of elasticity less than or equal to 110 GPa and an ultimate strength greater than 1 GPa. The elongate rod may have a structural bending stiffness in the range of about 500,000 N-mm 2 to about 2,000,000 N-mm 2 or about 1,250,000 N-mm 2 . In some instances, the elongate rod may be formed of a beta titanium alloy such as high strength Ti-15Mo-5Zr. In some instances the elongate rod has a diameter in the range of about 3.25 millimeters to about 4.5 millimeters. Various elongate rods including regions for receiving a flexible member along an exterior surface of the elongate rods are also provided.

摘要： A conveyor system for transporting cigarettes between a making machine and a packing machine includes a mass flow conveyor (204) for transporting cigarettes directly and a reservoir system (212) in which successive batches of cigarettes comprising portions of the stream on an input conveyor (204) are diverted when required into compartmented containers (224). Transfer to the containers is made by way of a plunger (232) and shuttle (234) arrangement which allows the stream to move continuously during transfer of a batch. Unloading containers to reform a continuous stream may involve use of a similar plunger and shuttle arrangement so that the reformed stream can move continuously on an output conveyor (218). The input and output conveyors (204, 218) may be provided with retractable spaced partitions to bound the ends of batches of cigarettes transferred from or to the respective conveyor.

摘要： An instrument, and method for using the same, for treating and repairing a vertebral body, which includes a steerable shaft and a distal end portion. The steerable shaft defines a longitudinal axis and includes a proximate portion and a flexible portion along the length. The distal end portion extends from the steerable shaft with an initial diameter, in the collapsed state, and has one or more expanded diameters. After inserting the instrument into the vertebral body, the flexible portion permits the distal end portion of the steerable shaft to be steered away from the longitudinal axis toward a center region within the vertebral body. A cutting surface upon the distal end portion is used to ream cancellous bone within the vertebral body and to create a single void which is off-set from the initial access axis.

摘要： Medical implants are formed at least in part from porous metal wherein the pores of the metal are filled with a hardenable material. The hardenable material can be used to assist in the manufacture of the implant, permitting detailed machining of the implant. Further, the hardenable material can be a resorbable material that strengthens the implant during implantation but is resorbed, once implanted, to permit bone growth and infiltration. Further, in an alternate embodiment, the hardenable material can be a thermoplastic material that can be heated by ultrasonic energy to create an adhesive bond between a fastener and bone structure.
