    • This application is concerned with a non-intrusive video quality measurement method, in particular where the video signal having: an original form; encoded form in which video signal has been encoded using a compression algorithm utilising a variable quantiser step size such that the encoded signal includes a quantiser step size parameter; and, a decoded form in which the encoded video signal has been at least in part reconverted to the original form. The method comprises the steps of : a) generating a first quality measure which is a function of said quantiser step size parameter; b) generating a second quality measure which is a function of the spatial complexity of the frames represented by the video signal in the decoded form; and, c) combining the first and second measures in order to obtain an estimate for the subjective visual quality of the decoded video.

    • In a codebook excited speech coder, speech is analysed (200) to produce coefficients of a synthesis filter and (203, 204) the parameters of a long-term prediction filter (LTP) and a codeword indication one of a set of excitations (stored in 205), the results being transmitted to a receiver where they can be used to resynthesise the speech. The LTP and excitation analysis involve computation (224) of impulse response products (stored in 301, 302). Computation of new products is performed by adding additional terms to products already formed. Multiplication of these products by excitation terms is performed using a pointer table (303) storing precalculated addresses of locations in the store (301, 302). If some excitations are shifted versions of others, some addressed can be obtained by modifying other addresses. The LTP analysis (203) may include selection between a simple delay prediction and a prediction consisting of the sum of two differently delayed terms, to provide improved predictor delay resolution.

    • A method of generating a measure of quality for a video signal representative of a plurality of frames, the video signal having: an original form; an encoded form in which the video signal has been encoded using a compression algorithm utilising a variable quantiser step size such that the encoded signal has a quantiser step size parameter associated therewith and utilising differential coding such that the encoded signal contains representations of the prediction residual of the signal; and a decoded form in which the encoded video signal has been at least in part reconverted to the original form, the method comprising: a) generating a first quality measure which is dependant on said quantiser step size parameter according to a predetermined relationship; b) generating a masking measure, the masking measure being dependant on the spatial complexity of at least part of the frames represented by the video signal in the decoded form according to a first predetermined relationship; and c) generating a combined measure, the combined measure being dependant upon both the first measure and the masking measure according to a predetermined relationship, wherein, the method also includes: generating an first measure which is dependant on the prediction residual of the signal according to a first predetermined relationship; and identifying one or more regions of the picture for which the first measure exceeds a threshold, wherein the masking measure is dependant on the spatial complexity of the identified region(s) according to a predetermined relationship; and further comprises: generating a background measure which is dependant on the prediction residual of the signal according to a second predetermined relationship; and identifying one or more other regions of the picture for which the background measure is below a threshold, wherein the masking measure is dependent on the spatial complexity of the identified other region(s) according to a predetermined relationship.

    • A method and system for encoding a video signal provides an encoded signal that is compressed in order that it may be efficiently transmitted over the link whilst also meeting a predetermined standard in terms of its estimated perceptual quality when the signal is decoded and displayed. This is achieved by providing, at the encoding end, a control unit (24) which utilises a perceptual quality metric (PQM) system (32) to quantify the estimated perceptual quality, and control logic (34) that compares said quantified PQM with a user-defined criterion that the signal must meet prior to transmission. The signal is preferably only transmitted onwards over the communications link if the criterion is met. Otherwise, the control unit (24) is operable either to modify the signal, e.g. using pre-filtering, or use modified encoding parameters to re-encode the signal in such a way as to improve its quality, that is to make the quantified PQM converge towards the criterion. A number of iterations of this encode-modify-encode sequence may be required before the resulting PQM meets the criterion and so be transmitted. The number of iterations may be limited in which case the modified encoding should at least provide an improvement in perceptual quality.

    • A digitally encoded video fingerprinting system for generating and comparing/matching fingerprints from digitally encoded video which has been encoded according to an encoding method which involves the generation of residual macroblocks of pixels and the generation of quantized transform coefficients of the residual macroblocks, or of portions of the residual macroblocks, comprises a fingerprint database (5) and a video processing subsystem (10). The video processing subsystem (10) includes a fingerprint sequence selection module (14, 24) which is operable to select one or more sets of frames from input video content to be processed in order to generate a fingerprint; a fingerprint calculation module (14, 26) which is operable to generate a fingerprint based on a set of frames selected by the fingerprint sequence selection module; and a fingerprint comparator module (14, 28) which is operable to compare two fingerprints and to output a similarity score of the compared fingerprints. The method used by the fingerprint selection and fingerprint calculation modules includes selecting a group of frames of the encoded video content; processing the digitally encoded video content to obtain a set of quantized transform coefficients of residual macroblocks or portions of residual macroblocks associated with each of the selected frames; identifying a set of residual macroblocks per frame whose transform coefficients satisfy a threshold criterion; and generating a digital video fingerprint for the encoded video content in dependence upon the identified macroblocks or some property thereof within each of the selected frames.
