    • An apparatus configured for dispensing grains of pollen may include a pollen storage container, a flow source configured to dispense the grains of pollen from the pollen storage container, and a control mechanism configured to selectively activate the flow source. The apparatus may or may not apply an electrical charge to the grains of pollen. Related methods may include steps of collecting pollen, inserting the pollen into a pollen storage container, connecting the pollen storage container to a dispensing device such as the above-described apparatus, and dispensing the pollen from the pollen storage container with the dispensing device. Known grains of pollen may be dispensed to create predetermined gamete crosses with known plants. Further, an outlet of a fan which dispenses the pollen from the pollen storage container or other parts of the dispensing device may be cleaned when swapping the pollen storage container to prevent cross-contamination.

    • A system configured to remove a sample portion of a seed may include a vibratory device configured to vibrate the seed and orient the seed on an axis, a grasping device configured to grasp the seed, and an apparatus that includes an abrasive material that is configured to abrade the seed. The system may thereby remove the sample portion from the seed without damaging the embryo of the seed. Accordingly, the viability of a remaining portion of the seed may be maintained while producing a sample portion of the seed on which tests may be conducted. In one embodiment the apparatus configured to remove a sample portion of a seed includes a sample removal plate, an abrasive screen, and a funnel plate. The apparatus, system, and method are configured to prevent cross-contamination of sample portions from different seeds.

    • An apparatuses, methods and systems for creating, handling and collecting seed portions are highly beneficial. The apparatus (10) includes a carrier (14) having one or more carrying positions (22) adapted to carry a seed (34). The carrying positions having a seed orienter (24) adapted to orient the seed (34) relative to the carrying position in the carrier for creating seed portions therefrom. The system includes a seed manifold (12) adapted to dock thereon a seed (3) carrier (14) having pre-positioned and pre-oriented seed (34) therein. Seed and seed portions removed from the seed in the carrier are communicated into a collector (104) and compartment layer (18) respectively using the seed manifold (12).
