    • Building automation systems typically comprise one or more simple control panels for controlling lighting, air conditioning etc. Such control panels are typically always on, and but are resource limited having small display areas as well as limited processing and memory capabilities. A system and a method is described for enabling the display of messages in a portion of the display area of such control panels. The system comprises an information centre which sources information such as weather forecasts or number of new emails. The collected information is then formatted into a message which is sent to a gateway device associated with the building automation system. The gateway device then provides the message to the control panels for display to the building occupants for representation (visual or audio) or action (eg turn on a device). The message generation system can comprise a web interface to allow occupants to customise the type and frequency of messages sent to their dwelling. Information gathering and processing can be distributed to the gateway devices such as by using instructions provided by the information centre. The system thus allows occupants to utilise existing infrastructure for displaying short informational messages of potential interest to the occupants.

    • A device configured for electrical connection with a load to control an output of the load.     • The Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) is a lighting control protocol that allows individual control and monitoring of each device in a lighting system (e.g. ballasts, emergency lighting etc), as well as groups of such devices. An improved DALI compliant Line Controller is described which may be advantageously used in a commercial setting. The sockets for both DALI lines and Ethernet are industry standard RJ45 sockets, allowing the use of industry standard cables (as compared to DB9 connectors which are not typically used in industrial settings). Further the use of RJ45 sockets enables the DALI controller to be SELV compliant, thus reducing the risk of electrical shock whilst working on the controller and advantageously providing a safer controller for use in an industrial environment. Additional modifications for use in an industrial environment include constructing DIN mountable slimline housing which extends along the DIN rail to minimise the footprint of the controller and increase packing efficiency on the rack, providing an externally accessible battery compartment on the top surface allowing quick and easy battery replacement without requiring removal of the controller from the DIN rack, and LED visual indicators on the top surface to provide status information and allow easy identification of a specific controller with a problem when mounted on a DIN rack with many other devices.

The assembly (10) comprises: a smoke detection chamber (20) defined by a body (22) having a plurality of openings for allowing airflow therethrough, the body (22) having a sound inlet aperture (25); a smoke detector (30) mounted to the body for communication within the chamber (20); an electrical circuit operatively connected to the smoke detector (30), the circuit providing an electrical signal when the smoke detector (30) detects smoke in the chamber (20); and a piezoelectric disc (40) mounted external to the chamber adjacent to the sound inlet aperture, the piezo disc (40) operable in response to the electrical signal to generate sound. The smoke detection chamber (20) is sized substantially in accordance to the Helmholtz formula to cause resonance at the operating frequency of the piezo disc (40).

    • A remote switch module is used to control the sockets of a general power outlet (GPO) to provide greater control and flexibility compared to standard GPOs. The GPO comprises a socket and power module for supplying power to the socket. A control module comprises a communication module for receiving a switching signal from a remote switch module, and switches the power supply state to the power module based upon the switching signal. The remote switch module comprises a switch actuator, power supply module and a remote communications module for transmitting a switching signal to the control module. The remote switch module may be a mobile computing device (eg mobile phone), or it may be a dedicated device. The remote switch module may be designed to attach to the GPO, and may include status indicators. A security module may also be used to ensure only authorised users can control a GPO.
