摘要： In a process for forming a double seam between the flange (2) of a can body (3) and a peripheral curl (5) of a can end, the assembly of can body and end are supported between a chuck (6) and a lifter (7). Relative rolling motion between the can end and first and second rolls (12, 15) progressively forms first and second operation seams. During first and second operations the lifter is raised to encourage engagement of the flange and curl. A preferred form of first operation seaming profile permits formation of small seams made of thin starting materials e.g. 0.14 mm.

摘要： A composite closure for a hot filled product, which comprises a mouled plastics ring (20) with internal formations for engaging complementary formations on a container neck, and an all-plastics laminated disk (40) which is top loaded into the ring. When the closure is fitted onto the container, the disk (40) is pinched between a shoulder (24) on the ring and an outside radius (13) on the container rim. Further engagement between disk and the ring occurs where the free edge (44) of the disk engages the ring beneath its shoulder. The ring and disk therefore engage one another at two concentric and spaced locations, and these engagements together determine a predetermined desired position of the ring in relation to the disk and to the container, despite high flexibility of the disk at the elevated temperature to which it is subjected.

摘要： The welding of laminates and lacquered metals is described for the purpose of producing tubular can bodies for three piece cans. The method describes how a coating-free margin is produced on can blanks in order to be able to produce satisfactory welds. A pulsed laser having a short pulse duration of less than 10 mu s and a peak power output of at least 0.1 megawatt is used to clean margins from can blanks of polymer/tinplate laminates which were then welded. A weld latitude of at least 200A was possible for forming can bodies with fully acceptable welds from laminates of tinplate and clear or white polypropylene or white PET, for example.

摘要： A composite closure for a container has a moulded plastics band (24) closed at one end by a plastics closure disc (72) which is held captive within a recess (62) formed around the band interior. Also on the band interior is a screw thread (44) by which the closure may be attached to a container neck (12). The disc is cut from a flat plastics sheet and is initially plane. It is oversized in relation to the recess of the band, so that in the assembled closure it is held in an outwardly domed condition by inward compressive stresses exerted by the band. This domed configuration assists with the capping operation, when a marginal edge region (82) of the disc which lies radially outside the container neck is deformed downwardly to generally frustoconical form.

摘要： A closure fitting is provided for a container which itself has no threads or equivalent closure securing means formed on it. The fitting, which can be pressed down over the mouth of a container, provides its own securing means by which a generally outer closure portion of the fitting can be removed from and resecured to a separable inner portion which remains attached to the container after opening. The closure fitting has a distendable conical hoop (22) moulded inside a surrounding skirt (20). Cooperating sets of threads, lugs, or the like (29, 28) are formed on the outer face of the hoop and on the inner face of the skirt. In the closure as formed, the closure securing means of the hoop and skirt do not operably engage one another. However, they are progressively brought into cooperating engagement as the hoop expands while the fitting is being press-fitted onto a container. The hoop is severably joined to the skirt; twisting or otherwise moving the closure portion in relation to the hoop in the first user operation breaks a separable connection (24) between the hoop and the skirt, so that the closure portion can be removed from the hoop. The closure portion can thereafter be used in the same manner as a conventional closure.

The width of the extrusion (5, 6) is interpreted in terms of the temperature of the weld, and the welding process can be adjusted accordingly. The measurement of the extrusion width can be done optically.
