    • The disclosure relates to an adjustable spanner or similar gripping device, which includes a shaft or handle (1) and a gripping head which is defined by two jaws (2, 3) of which one (2) is preferably stationary and the other (3) is displaceable so as to permit variation of the opening or gap of the head. At least the second jaw (3) is provided with cogs (18) which are in permanent mesh with cogs rotatably journalled in relation to the shaft (1) on a wheel (5) which is actuated by, for instance, a spring (8) to rotate in such a direction that the jaws (3, 2) always strive to approach one another, the wheel (5) co-operating with a locking or arresting device (10, 12, 13) which is switchable between two positions, namely a disengaged position in which the wheel (5) may rotate, and a locked or arrest position in which rotation of the wheel (5) is prevented and displacement of the one jaw in relation to the other is obstructed. The above-mentioned locking or arresting device includes a surface (9) disposed on or connected to the wheel (5), a second surface or locking cam (12) which is arranged to operate independently of the surface (9) disposed on or connected to the wheel (5), and a displaceable locking or arrest member (13) which is located between the above-mentioned two surfaces (9, 12) which converge in the locking direction.
