    • A memory (10) includes a variable refresh control circuit (20) for controlling the refresh rate of a memory array (12) using a capacitor for data storage. In one embodiment, each test cell of a plurality of test memory cells (30, 32, 34, and 36) is refreshed at different rates. A monitor circuit (18) is provided for monitoring the stored logic state of each of the plurality of test memory cells, and in response, adjusting the refresh rate of the memory array (12). In another embodiment, a variable refresh control circuit (20') includes a plurality of test memory cells (70, 72, 74, and 76) that are all refreshed at the same rate but each of the test memory cells (70, 72, 74, and 76) is implemented to have a different charge storage capacity than the other test memory cells. The monitor circuit (18) monitors the stored logic state of each of the plurality of test memory cells (70, 72, 74, and 76), and in response, adjusts a refresh rate of the memory array (12).

    • A wireless communication device (50) can include a radio frequency transceiver (52), an audio drive circuit (58) coupled to the transceiver, a speaker (10) having a voice coil (16) coupled to the audio drive circuit, and an antenna feed or radiating circuit (20) such as an RFID or NFID circuit coupled to the voice coil for at least radiating or receiving an electromagnetic signal via the voice coil. Such radiating circuits can be coupled to the voice coil using a band pass circuit designed to substantially prevent a radiating signal from the radiating circuit from interfering with audio drive circuit driving the speaker. The wireless communication device can further include an antenna (54) coupled to the radio frequency transceiver. Note, this arrangement can be designed to avoid problems involving electrostatic discharge sensitivity, electromagnetic interference coupling between the antenna and the voice coil, total radiated power, and specific absorption rate.

    • A portable communication device (150, 170, 175, 200) is responsive to an uplink change to determine whether the uplink change is practicable (305, 405, 505). If the uplink change is determined by the device to be practicable, the uplink change will be permitted by the device. If the uplink change is determined by the device to not be practicable, alternatives are evaluated (320, 420, 520). A network (102) upon determining that a portable communication device (150, 170, 175, 200) requires an uplink power change, transmits (630) the power change request to the portable device. Responsive to the power change request, the network receives from the device a data allocation change (640) associated with said power change request. The network transmits an updated uplink channel allocation assignment if available.
