    • A process is diclosed for separating foreground from background information in a document. In a first step, at least two images of the document are generated with different filtering factors. One of the images is filtered in such a way that it essentially cointains only foreground information or fragments thereof. This image is used as starting image for the subsequent image restoration. The other images represent reference images for restoring the document image. In a second step, the document image is restored so that as much foreground information as possible lost from the starting image is restored. For that purpose, starting image information is compared to and is completed with reference image information. Complementary information from the reference images is selected by means of an appropriate selection scheme, preferably by adjacent point observation. Individual areas with a determined size are placed both in the starting image and in each reference image around information-carrying points in the starting image. Information located in such areas in one of the reference images besides the information-carrying points is considered as new information and used to complete the starting image, or is stored together with starting image information. The image points whose information was eliminated by filtering from the original document represent image points with no information content.
