摘要： An improved system for identifying the user of postal equipment. A user provides identifying information, and if access is not appropriate based on that information, an additional comparison is performed before access is denied. This permits the user to select the identifying information needed for access from a set of predefined information, thereby permitting the user to change identifying information needed for access in the event the information has been or is suspected of having been compromised. Additional security may also be obtained by requiring the user to supply additional identifying information randomly selected from a predetermined set after valid first identifying information has been entered. Identifying information supplied by the user may include personal digital data, such as a digital fingerprint or retina eye scan.

摘要： In a franking system a postal security device (PSD) tracks a postage fund for dispensing postal indicia and enforce the configuration of the franking system. An authorization code, which is particular to the system, is used to verify the system configuration. An unauthorized change in the system configuration causes invalidation of the code and generation of the postal indicia is denied. Data center (125) records configuration information of each franking system (100). The data center generates a valid authorization code for verification in the franking system based on new configuration information. Components added to the system must be preapproved to prevent fraudulent generation of postage indicia. A registration identifier is assigned to each preapproved component which is necessary for interaction with the franking system.

To avoid latency of the franking operation, the invariable postal data (415) is preset for initial printing of the postage indicium (400), and the variable postal data (420) is determined and set for printing in real time. In printing the postage indicium (400), the invariable postal data (415) and the variable postal data (420) are presented in that order in one or more symbols.

摘要： In a postage payment system (100), a secure integrated circuit (IC) card (180) is used to manage postage funds, and create encrypted postage indicia (305, 605, 705). Among other things, the system (100) is capable of performing charge-back accounting of postage expenses and generating mail contents (300). In accordance with an aspect of the invention, the postage indicia (305, 605, 705) are applied to selected locations on the mail contents (300) while they are being generated. In the preferred embodiment, each mail content (300) is placed in a window envelope (340) such that the postage indicium (305, 605, 705) on the mail content (300) exposes through a window (347) of the envelope (340) to facilitate inspection of the indicium (305, 605, 705). In accordance with another aspect of the invention, by including transactional data (708) in addition to the traditional postal data (709) in a postage indicium (305, 605, 705), the indicium (305, 605, 705) can be used to pay bills, purchase products and services, including any courier service different than the postal service, or used as cash, a traveler's check, or money order.
