    • The invention relates to pipe couplings and particularly to the provision of a welded connection between adjacent pipe lengths (1, 2) of plastics material. In this regard such techniques as butt welding and electrofusion welding are widely known and practised, at their cost, but necessary when it is the supply of gas that is involved. The object of the present invention is to provide a welded connection suited to the less exacting conditions of pipe lines for trunking or for the supply of water, which objet is met by a method comprising locating over the adjacent ends of the pipe lengths, a coupling sleeve (3) of a coupling sleeve and the external diameters of the pipes being such that the coupling sleeve is a close sliding fit on the ends of the pipes, applying an external drive (6) to the coupling sleeve to rotate the coupling sleeve on the pipe ends at a rate such that heat generated by friction melts the interface between the coupling sleeve and the pipe ends, and whereby following cessation of rotation, and on cooling, an effective weld is formed between the coupling sleeve and each pipe end.

    • The invention relates to cutters (1) for cutting connecting holes in plastics pipes (8). Predominantly the connection of a service to an existing plastics pipe is by way of an electro-fusible saddle (7) being located on and sealed to the pipe and the cutter introduced down the stem of the saddle to cut a hole in the pipe and thereby connect the pipe to a spigot or branch on the saddle to which a service line is connected. The cutting of the hole in the pipe inevitably results in leakage that can be dangerous when the pipe is carrying gas. There are constructions of cutter that attend to the question of leakage at the point that a hole is cut but which still have a leakage problem at the point that the cutter is withdrawn and before a cap is applied to the stem. The object of the invention is to eliminate this problem, which objective is met by a cutter construction comprising a cylindrical blade (2), a threaded body portion (3) attached to the blade, and there being an integral first length of rod or tube (4) on the body portion to the opposite side of the cylindrical blade portion together with a second length of rod or tube (15, 16) extending from an detachably attached to the said first length, the junction between the said first and second lengths serving as a visual indicator means. Thus, once a hole in the pipe has been cut the said second length maintains its contact with a sealing ring in the stem during the retraction of the cutter until the visual indicator confirms that the cutter has been fully withdrawn following which the exposed second length is removed without the aid of additional tooling with the seal maintained against the first length of rod or tube, the fitting of the cap providing additional security against leakage.

    • The invention relates to butt welding and is particularly concerned with the provision of self-determined cooling times during which pipe ends must remain clamped in the machine to ensure the creation of an effective weld. Most effective butt welding machines are already known such as are described in British Patent No. 2191976, but even machines of this sophistication leave largely to the discretion of an operative the degree of time that the machine must be left after the welding stage and before the clamps can safely be removed. Almost inevitably this results in the pipes being clamped in the machine far longer than is actually necessary and the object of the invention is to provide for shortened cooling times that are self-determined by the machine and by ambient temperature conditions. The invention involves the provision of control means employing parameters sensed and/or measured to limit the cooling stage to a duration no more than is required having due regard to ambient temperature conditions and the amount of heat input to the pipe ends during the heating and/or bead-up stage.
