    • Data communication apparatus comprises a master unit (2) and at least one physically separate, passive slave unit (4). The master unit (2) has a first part (29) of an inductive communication system, and a processor (20) connected to the first part of the inductive communication system. The slave unit has a second part (40) of the inductive communication system, a data store (48), and a modulator (44, 49) responsive to data from the data store and connected to the second part (40) of the inductive communication system. The first and second parts of the inductive communication system (29, 40) are constructed so that when the slave unit (4) is brought into proximity with the master unit (2), power is inductively coupled from the master unit to the slave unit via the inductive communication system. The modulator (44, 49) in the slave unit (4) is thereby activated to cause data from the store (48) to be inductively communicated from the slave unit (4) to the master unit (2) via the inductive communication system. The processor (20) is responsive to the data supplied to the master unit (2).

    • Methods, systems, and devices for controlling electrical energy consumption in an electricity distribution network, so as to reduce net energy consumption in a given area during a given time period, are described. In particular, a method of controlling electrical energy consumption within an electricity distribution network is described. The method comprises maintaining a database of information about electric devices, and identifying a time period during which consumption of electrical energy is to be controlled. The method further comprises selecting, based on device profile information stored in the database, groups of electric devices, and associating one or more time intervals with each of the selected groups. Requests are sent to the electric devices of the selected groups to control electrical energy consumption and/or provision by the electric devices. This enables a reduction in net consumption of electrical energy during a respective time interval.

    • A data storage device communicates wirelessly with a reader (300). The data storage device has a data store (207) for storing data and a hidden PIN data store (209) for storing identification data. A controller (201) of the data store has the ability to write identification data to the hidden PIN data store (209). The controller (201) controls operation of the data storage device in accordance with the outcome of a comparison between identification data stored in the hidden data store (209) and identification communicated to it by a reader (300). The controller (201) may enable the identification data stored in the hidden PIN store to be replaced or supplemented, in the event that a reader communicating with the data storage device provides to the data storage device identification data that has a predetermined relationship with, for example matches, the identification data stored in the hidden PIN data store (209).
